Chapter 10 - SARAH REED’S FINAL YEAR
Emily remembered her mother’s final year clearly.
Sarah became thin.
She struggled to breathe.
Doctors diagnosed an aggressive lung disease despite her never smoking.
She died six months after the diagnosis.
Vanessa claimed the disease had been caused by long-term chemical exposure.
For years, Sarah worked in an architecture archive owned by Vale Development.
The basement contained insulation treated with a banned industrial compound.
Malcolm knew employees were becoming sick.
He concealed the reports to avoid lawsuits.
Sarah discovered the records.
She planned to expose him.
Malcolm moved her into a windowless document room where the contamination was highest.
“He did not inject her with poison,” Vanessa said.
“He simply made sure she kept breathing it.”
Emily gripped the phone.
“How do you know?”
“I found the reports in my father’s safe.”
“Why tell me now?”
“Because he will sacrifice me before he takes responsibility.”
Vanessa wanted immunity and a reduced sentence.
In exchange, she would provide the medical files proving Malcolm knowingly exposed Sarah.
Emily felt sick.
Even her mother’s death had been engineered through paperwork and patience.
Vanessa continued.
“There is one more file.”
“What file?”
“The list of everyone Malcolm paid after Adrian died.”
“Where is it?”
“Inside Margaret Hawthorne’s house.”
Emily glanced toward Margaret.
Vanessa gave an address and ended the call.
The location belonged to the old Hawthorne lakeside estate.
Margaret had not visited it in years.
Police searched the property.
Inside a sealed room beneath the boathouse, they found company medical reports, shipping ledgers and personal files.
Malcolm kept copies of every crime as insurance against the Hawthorne family.
Sarah’s employment records showed dangerous chemical levels.
Managers were instructed not to warn her.
A handwritten note carried Malcolm’s initials.

Emily sat on the boathouse floor and cried.
Daniel remained outside until she asked him to enter.
“My mother thought she was simply unlucky.”
“She probably knew more than she told you.”
“She still went to work every day.”
Emily looked at the file.
“She was dying and paying rent while these people attended charity dinners.”
Daniel had no answer.
The evidence led to federal charges against Malcolm.
Agents attempted to arrest him at the Vale headquarters.
He was gone.
His private jet had left Chicago hours earlier.
The flight plan listed Montreal.
The plane never landed.
Its transponder disappeared over Lake Michigan.
Investigators feared another staged crash.
A search of Malcolm’s office revealed cash, passports and a private medical file for Vanessa.
The file described a congenital heart condition.
Vanessa had only months to live without experimental surgery.
Malcolm had arranged the operation overseas.
He had also canceled it after her arrest.
Vanessa framed Emily partly to protect the merger.
But she was also obeying the only man who controlled whether she lived.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“That does not excuse her.”
“No.”
Emily thought of Vanessa’s hand striking her face.
“It explains why she was afraid.”
Fear had shaped everyone in the story.
Sarah ran to protect her child.
Margaret forgot because someone drugged her.
Lydia obeyed until obedience became more dangerous than truth.
Vanessa attacked the easiest person because confronting her father felt impossible.
Emily refused to let explanation become forgiveness.
But she agreed to support Vanessa’s transfer to a medical facility under police guard.
Vanessa underwent surgery while remaining in custody.
When she woke, Malcolm Vale was standing beside her bed.
