Chapter 5 - THE MEMORY MARGARET LOST

Margaret returned to the hospital where she had been treated twenty-five years earlier.

Most records had been destroyed under retention rules.

One archived surgical note remained.

Margaret had arrived unconscious with medication in her bloodstream.

The drug caused memory loss and confusion.

Her family doctor claimed it was prescribed for anxiety.

Margaret had never taken it voluntarily.

The physician’s name was Arthur Vale.

Malcolm’s older brother.

Arthur had died years earlier.

His role connected the Vale family to Margaret’s crash, Adrian’s death and Sarah’s disappearance.

Daniel asked his mother what she remembered.

Only fragments returned.

Rain against a windshield.

Sarah crying in the passenger seat.

Adrian’s letters inside a briefcase.

A black car following them.

Then nothing.

Margaret had helped Sarah reach a safe apartment.

Before she could return to Adrian, someone forced Margaret’s vehicle from the road.

The family told her the accident happened while she was driving alone.

Every person around her participated in the lie.

Emily listened without speaking.

Margaret looked at her.

“I am sorry.”

“You were hurt too.”

“I still spent years believing Sarah abandoned Adrian.”

“You believed what they needed you to believe.”

The words offered understanding, not forgiveness.

Margaret accepted the difference.

The federal investigation into Malcolm Vale expanded.

His attorneys attempted to block access to old shipping records.

Daniel postponed the merger.

The board responded by calling an emergency meeting.

Several directors accused him of risking billions over an unproven family claim.

Emily did not attend.

She remained in the secure hotel with two guards outside her door.

Late that night, someone knocked.

“Room service.”

Emily had ordered nothing.

She called hotel security.

The man outside began forcing the lock.

Emily moved toward the bathroom.

The door burst open.

A tall man in a hotel uniform entered.

He held a cloth and a syringe.

Emily threw a lamp.

The man blocked it and rushed toward her.

She slammed the bathroom door against his arm.

The syringe fell.

One of Daniel’s guards entered and tackled him.

Police discovered the attacker was a private investigator employed by Vale Maritime.

His instructions were not to kill Emily.

He was supposed to drug her and place stolen jewelry inside her luggage.

Vanessa intended to create a second theft accusation.

The first frame had failed publicly.

The next would be supported by forged hotel footage.

Detective Ruiz searched the attacker’s phone.

She found photographs of Emily, Daniel and Margaret.

Another photograph showed a woman leaving Vanessa’s private apartment.

Daniel recognized her.

Her name was Lydia Shaw.

She had served as Vanessa’s assistant for six years.

The mansion footage showed Lydia near the security room shortly before the necklace was planted.

Detective Ruiz believed Lydia helped Vanessa access the camera system.

Lydia had disappeared after the party.

Her phone last connected near an abandoned Hawthorne warehouse beside the river.

Emily insisted on joining the search.

Daniel refused.

“You were nearly kidnapped.”

“That is why I am going.”

“What does that mean?”

“They will keep coming while I hide.”

She held Adrian’s letter against her chest.

“My mother spent her life running because powerful people gave her no other choice.”

“I am not spending mine the same way.”

Daniel looked at her for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

They traveled to the warehouse with police.

Inside, they found Lydia’s purse and blood on the concrete.

On the wall, someone had written a message in red paint.

THE MAID SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE BLAME.
