Chapter 7 — The Secret Ethan Buried

The old photograph stayed in Vivienne’s hand for several minutes.

She stared at the faces.

Her father.

Eleanor.

And Ethan.

Young.

Confident.

Standing together like they were part of the same world.

A world she had never been allowed to see.

Natalie looked over her shoulder.

“Vivienne… Ethan was involved before you even met him.”

Vivienne shook her head slowly.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Not because she disagreed.

Because she was trying to accept something impossible.

“I met him at a charity event.”

She remembered the night clearly.

Ethan had approached her while she was looking at paintings.

He had smiled.

He had asked about her father.

He had told her:

“You remind me of someone who carries the weight of the whole world.”

At the time, she thought it was romantic.

Now it sounded like an investigation.

He had not accidentally found her.

He had chosen her.

Natalie carefully took the photograph.

“Look at the date.”

Vivienne looked closer.

Her blood ran cold.

The photograph was taken six months before Ethan first appeared in her life.

Six months before the man she loved suddenly became the center of her world.

“He knew who I was.”

Natalie nodded.

“He knew everything.”

Vivienne walked away from the desk.

The pain inside her was changing.

At first, it was heartbreak.

Now it was anger.

A quiet, controlled anger.

“They didn't just steal my money.”

She looked at the photograph.

“They stole my choices.”

Suddenly, a noise came from upstairs.

Both women froze.

Someone was inside.

Natalie whispered:

“Did you tell anyone we were coming?”

Vivienne shook her head.

“No.”

Footsteps moved across the old wooden floor.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone searching.

Natalie grabbed her phone.

“We need to leave.”

But Vivienne looked toward the stairs.

“No.”

Natalie stared at her.

“Vivienne—”

“For eight years, they walked into my life whenever they wanted.”

She held the photograph tightly.

“I’m done running.”

They moved silently upstairs.

The footsteps stopped.

A bedroom door was slightly open.

Vivienne pushed it.

Inside, a man stood near the window.

He turned.

Both women froze.

It was Ethan’s old attorney.

Marcus Hale.

The same lawyer from the security footage.

His face changed when he saw Vivienne.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Vivienne stepped forward.

“Funny.”

Her voice was calm.

“I was about to say the same thing.”

Marcus looked nervous.

“I can explain.”

“No.”

Vivienne held up the photograph.

“Start with this.”

His expression collapsed.

Because he knew.

The secret was no longer hidden.
