Chapter 11 — The Night Their Marriage Began

That evening, Vivienne returned to the hotel where she was staying temporarily.
She could not sleep.
The phrase kept repeating.
ASK HIM ABOUT THE FIRST NIGHT.
She opened her old wedding album.
She looked at the photographs.
Everyone smiling.
Everyone celebrating.
Everyone pretending.
Then she found it.
A photograph taken outside the reception hall.
Ethan was standing near the parking area.
Talking to someone.
Vivienne had never noticed before.
She zoomed in.
Her heart stopped.
It was Eleanor.
But they were not arguing.
They looked worried.
Like they were discussing something serious.
She searched through her phone backups.
Thousands of photos.
Years of memories.
Then she found a video.
Recorded accidentally by one of the guests.
The camera was pointed toward the hallway.
The audio was faint.
But clear enough.
Ethan’s voice.
“I can’t do this.”
Eleanor answered:
“You already started.”
“I didn’t expect to care about her.”
Silence.
Then Eleanor said:
“Feelings are temporary. Money lasts forever.”
Vivienne covered her mouth.
The video continued.
Ethan whispered:
“What if she finds out?”
Eleanor replied:
“Then make sure she never does.”
The recording ended.
Vivienne sat there for a long time.
Because this was the truth she had secretly wanted.
The answer to the question that hurt the most.
Did Ethan ever love her?
And now she knew.
Maybe he had.
But love did not excuse betrayal.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
She stood quickly.
“Who is it?”
No answer.
Then a voice.
“Vivienne.”
Her blood froze.
Ethan.
She opened the door.
Two security officers stood beside him.
He looked exhausted.
Broken.
But alive.
“I need to talk to you.”
Vivienne stared at him.
“You lost the right to explain yourself.”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
He looked at the flash drive in her hand.
“Because what’s on that drive is not the whole truth.”
Vivienne said nothing.
Ethan continued:
“They didn’t just want your money.”
“What else?”
His face became serious.
“They wanted your child.”
The words destroyed the silence.
Vivienne instinctively placed her hand over her stomach.
“What?”
Ethan looked terrified.
“The baby.”
He swallowed.
“The inheritance.”
Vivienne stepped back.
“What are you saying?”
Ethan looked directly at her.
“Your father created a trust.”
A pause.
“One that only activates when your child is born.”
Everything suddenly made sense.
The urgency.
The wedding trap.
The documents.
The pressure.
They were not only trying to control Vivienne.
They were trying to control the future heir.
Ethan whispered:
“That is why they needed you to sign.”
Vivienne looked at the man who had betrayed her.
And for the first time…
She saw something in his eyes.
Not manipulation.
Regret.
But before she could respond…
A gunshot echoed outside the hotel.
Everyone froze.
The lights went out.

And someone whispered from the darkness:
“Get away from her.”
