Chapter 8 – The Custody Hearing

By sunrise, the storm had passed.
The courthouse, however, was anything but calm.
News vans crowded the streets. Reporters stood behind barricades, broadcasting live as cameras tracked every vehicle pulling into the parking lot.
The arrest of Victor Lawson—respected businessman, generous philanthropist, and public face of several charitable foundations—had become the biggest story in the state overnight.
Richard Bennett stepped out of a black SUV with Emma's small hand in his.
She wore the same blue sweater from the night before.
She hadn't spoken much since leaving the hospital.
She simply held her stuffed rabbit close to her chest.
Inside, Laura remained under medical supervision. Her doctors had forbidden her from attending the emergency custody hearing.
Victor, however, had requested it.
Courtroom 4A filled quickly.
Judge Eleanor Whitmore entered precisely at nine o'clock.
"Be seated."
Victor appeared moments later, wearing an orange county jail uniform beneath a dark blazer his attorney had insisted he wear to soften his appearance.
He looked tired, but not defeated.
His attorney, Charles Mercer, stood confidently.
"Your Honor," Mercer began, "my client has been publicly convicted before a trial has even begun. He respectfully requests temporary custody of his daughter be preserved through supervised placement with his family until these allegations are resolved."
Richard's attorney, Daniel Brooks, rose immediately.
"Your Honor, the evidence tells a very different story."
He placed a thick binder on the clerk's desk.
"This includes hospital records, photographs, witness statements, and video evidence showing Mr. Lawson assaulting his wife."
Mercer objected.
"The criminal matter has not yet been adjudicated."
Judge Whitmore nodded.
"I'm aware."
Daniel continued calmly.
"But today's question isn't guilt."
"It's safety."
The courtroom grew silent.
Daniel pressed a button on the courtroom monitor.
The security camera footage appeared on the screen.
Frame by frame, Victor's hands were seen pushing Laura toward the marble staircase.
A murmur spread across the gallery.
Victor stared at the screen without blinking.
Mercer quickly stood.
"Your Honor, that video lacks audio and context."
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"Then perhaps the child can provide context."
Every head turned.
Emma looked up at Richard.
He knelt beside her.
"You don't have to speak if you don't want to."
Emma thought quietly for a moment.
Then she stood.
The courtroom became completely still as the six-year-old walked to the witness chair, accompanied by a child advocate.
Judge Whitmore smiled gently.
"Emma, do you know the difference between telling the truth and telling a lie?"
Emma nodded.
"The truth is what really happened."
"And what happens if someone tells a lie?"
"My mommy says lies always get tired because they have to keep running."
A few people smiled despite the tension.
The judge nodded.
"Can you tell me what happened yesterday?"
Emma hugged her stuffed rabbit.
"Daddy pushed Mommy."
Victor closed his eyes.
Emma continued.
"Mommy fell."
"There was blood."
"Daddy said nobody was coming."
She looked directly at Victor for the first time since entering the courtroom.
"You said Grandpa wouldn't save us."
The courtroom was silent enough to hear someone quietly crying in the back row.
Judge Whitmore looked down at her notes before speaking.
"This Court finds that Emma Lawson faces an immediate risk if placed in her father's custody."
She struck the gavel once.
"Temporary sole custody is granted to Laura Lawson."
She paused.
"Until Laura recovers, physical guardianship will remain with Richard Bennett."
Victor's shoulders slumped.
But instead of looking angry...
He smiled.
A slow, unsettling smile.
Michael Grant noticed immediately.
Something wasn't right.
Before anyone could react, a court deputy rushed through the rear doors.
He whispered urgently into the prosecutor's ear.
The prosecutor's face turned white.
Judge Whitmore frowned.
"What is it?"
The prosecutor stood slowly.
"Your Honor..."
He hesitated.
"Safety Deposit Box 317..."
"...was emptied early this morning."
Richard's grip tightened on his cane.
"By whom?"
The prosecutor looked directly at Victor.
"The bank records show..."
"...someone using Victor Lawson's power of attorney accessed it just forty-three minutes before his arrest."
May you like
Victor's smile widened.
The most important evidence had vanished.
