Chapter 4 – The Recording

The tiny red light blinked steadily above the grand staircase.
One of Richard Bennett's investigators, former FBI agent Michael Grant, immediately pointed toward it.
"Don't touch anything."
Everyone in the foyer turned.
Victor's expression changed for only a fraction of a second, but Michael noticed.
That single glance told him everything.
Victor knew exactly what the camera had captured.
Paramedics carefully lifted Laura onto a stretcher.
She grabbed Richard's sleeve before they wheeled her away.
"The camera..."
Her voice was barely audible.
Richard leaned closer.
"What about it?"
"He... forgot..."
Her eyes closed briefly from exhaustion.
"He forgot it was there."
Richard followed her gaze toward the blinking lens.
A slow smile appeared on Michael's face.
"If it's been recording all evening," he said, "this case just became very simple."
Victor interrupted immediately.
"That's my private security system. No one has permission to access it."
The county judge looked at him without emotion.
"Mr. Lawson, under the emergency protection order and the ongoing criminal investigation, every recording made tonight is now evidence."
Victor's jaw tightened.
While the paramedics rushed Laura toward the waiting ambulance, Michael climbed onto a chair beneath the staircase.
He carefully removed the small camera.
"It's still warm," he said.
"It never stopped recording."
Another investigator connected a portable monitor.
"Let's verify the footage."
Victor took one step forward.
"I want my attorney."
"You'll have one," Sheriff Hayes replied.
"But first, we're preserving evidence."
The video began to play.
At first, it showed an ordinary evening.
Laura helping Emma finish a coloring book.
Victor entering the foyer.
No sound.
Only images.
Then the argument started.
Laura backed away.
Victor followed.
Even without audio, his aggressive movements were unmistakable.
Emma appeared in the hallway clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Michael paused the recording.
"No accidental fall so far."
Victor folded his arms.
"You don't know what happened next."
Michael pressed Play.
Laura turned toward the staircase.
Victor suddenly grabbed her wrist.
She tried to pull away.
He shoved her with both hands.
Laura lost her balance.
She crashed against the marble steps before tumbling to the floor.
Emma screamed.
Victor simply stood there.
The room fell completely silent.
Even the rain outside seemed distant.
Sheriff Hayes slowly looked at Victor.
"Would you like to change your statement?"
Victor swallowed.
"That's not what it looks like."
Michael replayed the shove in slow motion.
Frame by frame.
Victor's hands were clearly visible.
There was no doubt.
No misunderstanding.
No accident.
The sheriff stepped forward.
"Victor Lawson..."
He reached for his handcuffs.
"You are under arrest for aggravated domestic assault and child endangerment."
Before the cuffs could close around his wrists, Victor suddenly shoved one of the deputies aside.
He sprinted toward the hallway.
"Stop him!" someone shouted.
Victor disappeared into the mansion.
A second later, a door slammed upstairs.
Michael looked toward Richard.
"I'll bet everything he didn't run to hide."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"No."
"He ran for something."

Inside his pocket, Victor's fingers wrapped tightly around the small hard drive hidden in his jacket.
If he escaped with it, years of secrets would disappear forever.
