Chapter 7 – The Last Insurance Policy

The video began with Laura sitting alone in her car.

It was parked beneath an old oak tree near Emma's elementary school. Sunlight filtered through the windshield, a sharp contrast to the storm that now raged outside Richard Bennett's estate.

Laura looked exhausted.

There was a fading bruise beneath her left eye, carefully hidden beneath makeup that no longer concealed the pain.

She took a slow breath before speaking.

"If you're seeing this... then my worst fear came true."

No one in the room moved.

Michael Grant quietly turned up the volume.

Laura looked directly into the camera.

"My name is Laura Bennett Lawson. This recording is voluntary. If I disappear, die unexpectedly, or suffer what anyone calls an accident, I want investigators to know one thing."

She paused.

"It wasn't an accident."

Richard lowered his head.

Every word felt like a knife.

Laura continued.

"Victor has spent years building two lives."

"One for the public."

"One behind closed doors."

She held up a leather notebook.

"I've documented every assault I could remember. Every hospital visit. Every threat. Every lie I was forced to tell."

She flipped through the pages.

"They're scanned onto the memory card."

Another pause.

"But that's only part of it."

Michael exchanged a glance with the county prosecutor.

"What does she mean?"

Laura answered before anyone could ask.

"Victor isn't only violent."

"He's stealing."

The room became silent again.

"He created shell companies using employees' identities."

"He launders money through fake charities."

"He bribes contractors to win public construction projects."

"And several local officials accepted payments."

Michael immediately began taking notes.

"This just became federal."

Richard remained expressionless.

His focus never left the screen.

Laura reached into a small envelope.

"If this video exists, someone I trusted has found the memory card."

She removed a silver key.

"This key opens safety deposit box 317 at First National Trust."

"The bank manager already has written instructions."

"If I don't personally appear before July 15..."

"...everything inside goes directly to federal investigators."

Michael slowly smiled.

"She built a dead man's switch."

Richard looked at him.

"Explain."

"If Victor destroyed one set of evidence..."

Michael nodded toward the screen.

"...another set would automatically reach law enforcement."

Laura looked into the camera one last time.

"Dad..."

Richard froze.

"If you're the one watching this..."

"I'm sorry I stayed away."

"I wasn't protecting myself."

"I was protecting Emma."

A tear rolled down Richard's face.

Laura smiled sadly.

"You always taught me that courage isn't about being fearless."

"It's about doing what's right, even when you're terrified."

She looked off-camera for a brief second before returning her eyes to the lens.

"If Victor is still free..."

"...please don't let him hurt another family."

The recording ended.

No one spoke for several long moments.

Finally, the county prosecutor closed the laptop.

"We're not investigating a domestic assault anymore."

Michael nodded.

"We're investigating attempted murder, organized financial crime, witness intimidation, and public corruption."

Richard picked up the silver key Laura had shown in the video.

His voice was calm.

"We're going to the bank."

Just then, Michael's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression darkened instantly.

"What?"

He stood up.

"When?"

Another pause.

He slowly lowered the phone.

"Victor's lawyer just filed an emergency motion."

Richard frowned.

"For what?"

Michael looked around the room.

May you like

"He claims Victor was defending himself..."

"...and he's demanding immediate custody of Emma."
