Chapter 3 – The Locked Door

Thunder shook the mansion just as Richard Bennett reached the front entrance.
The massive oak doors remained closed.
Inside, Victor watched the security monitors with growing panic. Six black SUVs filled the circular driveway. Men in dark suits spread across the property with military precision while two uniformed sheriff's deputies climbed the front steps beside a county judge.
Victor's phone buzzed.
"Sir," one of his employees whispered, "the security gates have been overridden."
Victor's face went pale.
"That's impossible."
"They had a court order."
He ended the call without another word.
Laura managed a faint smile despite the pain shooting through her body.
"I told you..."
Victor glared at her.
"This isn't over."
He hurried into his office and opened a hidden safe behind a framed painting. Inside were stacks of cash, several passports, and a small hard drive.
He grabbed the drive.
Years of financial records.
Offshore accounts.
Private conversations.
Enough evidence to destroy everything he had built.
He slipped it into his pocket.
Outside, Richard studied the locked entrance.
His chief of security stepped forward.
"Sir, the door is electronically sealed from the inside."
Richard nodded once.
He turned to Sheriff Daniel Hayes.
"You have the warrant."
Hayes held up the emergency protection order.
"Victor Lawson! Open this door immediately!"
Silence.
Again he knocked.
"Mr. Lawson, this is the sheriff's department!"
Still nothing.
Richard checked his watch.
Ten seconds passed.
He looked at the sheriff.
"He's stalling."
The sheriff sighed.
"I believe you're right."
Richard calmly stepped aside.
"My legal obligation was to ask politely."
Hayes gave a sharp nod to two deputies.
"Force entry."
One deputy swung the steel battering ram.
The first impact echoed through the mansion.
Boom!
Emma jumped.
Laura closed her eyes.
Victor froze in the hallway.
A second strike splintered the heavy oak frame.
Boom!
Cracks spread through the wood.
The third hit shattered the lock.
The doors burst inward.
Rain and cold night air rushed into the foyer.
Richard Bennett entered first.
He immediately saw his daughter lying in a pool of blood.
For one unbearable moment, he couldn't move.
Laura looked up.
"Dad..."
His cane slipped from his hand and struck the marble floor.
He crossed the room faster than anyone expected from a man his age.
Dropping to his knees, he gently lifted Laura's face.
"My little girl..."
His voice broke.
"I'm sorry I wasn't here sooner."
Laura reached for his hand.
"You came."
Richard swallowed hard before carefully brushing damp hair away from her forehead.
"I'll always come."
Behind them, paramedics rushed inside carrying medical equipment.
One medic examined Laura's leg while another checked her pulse.
"She's losing blood," the medic called.
"We need to move now."
Emma threw herself into Richard's arms, crying uncontrollably.
"I called like Mommy said."
Richard hugged his granddaughter tightly.
"You were so brave."
Across the foyer, Victor slowly emerged from the hallway, forcing a calm smile.
"This has all been a misunderstanding."
Richard stood.
His grief disappeared.
Only cold fury remained.
He looked directly into Victor's eyes.
Then he spoke the quietest words in the room.
"If my daughter dies..."
He paused.
"...prison will become the safest place you'll ever live."
At that exact moment, one of the investigators noticed something near the staircase.
A tiny red light.
Blinking.
May you like
A hidden security camera.
Still recording.
