Chapter 14 – The Final Trap

The ambulance doors closed once again.
Laura lay exhausted beneath a warm blanket, an oxygen mask covering her face. Smoke inhalation had left her weak, but her eyes remained sharp.
Richard sat beside her.
"You said the envelope was fake."
Laura gave a small nod.
"It contained enough information to keep Victor interested..."
She paused to catch her breath.
"...but not enough to destroy him."
Richard frowned.
"Then where's the real evidence?"
Laura looked toward Emma, asleep in another ambulance under the care of a pediatric nurse.
"Do you remember when I asked you to keep Grandma's grandfather clock?"
Richard blinked.
"The one from the lake house?"
"Yes."
"You told me never to sell it."
Laura managed a tired smile.
"I wasn't being sentimental."
Realization slowly spread across Richard's face.
"The clock..."
Laura nodded.
"The real evidence has been hidden inside it for eighteen months."
At that very moment, Victor sat alone in the county detention center.
He had just learned that Laura survived the warehouse fire.
For the first time since his arrest, genuine fear crossed his face.
The steel door opened.
His attorney, Charles Mercer, entered carrying a briefcase.
"We have a problem."
Victor looked up.
"How bad?"
"Worse than before."
Charles placed a newspaper on the table.
KIDNAPPED WOMAN RESCUED FROM BURNING WAREHOUSE
Victor clenched his fists.
"Natalie?"
"Missing."
Victor closed his eyes.
"She won't talk."
Charles hesitated.
"I'm not worried about Natalie."
Victor looked at him.
"I'm worried about Laura."
Two hours later...
Federal agents arrived at Richard's lakeside estate.
The antique grandfather clock stood exactly where it had for decades.
Michael Grant carefully removed the wooden back panel.
At first, he found nothing.
Then his flashlight reflected off polished steel.
"There."
Hidden inside a false compartment was a waterproof metal case.
Michael lifted it out carefully.
Richard opened it.
Inside were:
Three encrypted hard drives.
Two passports under Victor's aliases.
Original accounting ledgers.
Signed bribery agreements.
A ledger containing payments to public officials.
Dozens of photographs.
A handwritten journal.
On top lay a sealed envelope addressed simply:
For Federal Investigators
Michael stared at Laura.
"You planned all this?"
Laura smiled faintly.
"I had two years."
Three days later...
Federal prosecutors held a press conference.
The evidence recovered from the clock linked Victor Lawson to:
Money laundering.
Tax fraud.
Racketeering.
Bribery.
Witness intimidation.
Attempted murder.
Kidnapping conspiracy.
Arrest warrants were issued for nine additional people.
Including...
Charles Mercer.
Natalie Cross.
Two corporate executives.
Three public officials.
And the security chief who had helped cover Victor's crimes for years.
Richard quietly watched the televised announcement from Laura's hospital room.
Laura squeezed his hand.
"It's finally over."
Richard looked at her.
"I hope so."
Just then, Michael's phone rang.
He listened silently for several seconds.
His expression changed.
"What happened?" Richard asked.
Michael lowered the phone slowly.
"They found Natalie."
Laura sat upright despite the pain.
"Alive?"
Michael nodded.
"She surrendered."
Richard frowned.
"Why would she do that?"
Michael looked toward the television, where Victor's face filled every news channel in America.
"Because..."
"...she says Victor isn't the person who ordered the attacks."
The room fell silent.
Michael took a slow breath.
"She says..."
May you like
"...there's someone above Victor."
And that name had never appeared in any of Laura's evidence.
