Chapter 9 – The First Arrest

By noon, the news had spread across the city.
Satellite news vans crowded the street outside the Carter Foundation. Reporters spoke into cameras while employees slipped out the back entrance, avoiding questions they could no longer answer.
"Margaret Carter, one of the state's most influential philanthropists, is now the focus of a criminal investigation..."
Inside the District Attorney's Office, Detective Sarah Monroe placed the surveillance video, Emily's statement, and the documents recovered from the hidden office onto the conference table.
Assistant District Attorney Daniel Reeves flipped through the evidence in silence.
"The video is strong," he said.
"The journal establishes a pattern of abuse."
He picked up the handwritten plan Margaret had kept in her secret file.
"And this..." He looked at Monroe. "This shows intent."
Monroe nodded.
"I believe we have enough."
Reeves didn't hesitate.
"Prepare the arrest warrant."
Margaret was sitting in her attorney's office when two detectives entered.
Richard Lawson immediately stood.
"Detective."
Monroe handed him a folded document.
"This is a warrant for the arrest of Margaret Evelyn Carter."
Margaret stared at the paper as if it were written in another language.
"No..." she whispered.
"This can't be happening."
Monroe stepped forward.
"Mrs. Carter, you're under arrest for aggravated assault resulting in the death of an unborn child. You have the right to remain silent..."
The familiar words echoed through the office.
Margaret's legs gave out.
She collapsed into her chair, her perfectly styled hair falling across her face.
She looked toward Ethan, who had arrived moments earlier after being notified of the arrest.
Their eyes met.
"Ethan," she pleaded, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "I'm your mother."
He remained motionless.
"I know."
"You can't let them do this to me."
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he answered with a calmness that hurt more than anger ever could.
"The woman who raised me died the moment she chose her pride over my wife... and over her grandson."
Margaret reached toward him.
He took one step back.
The handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
As officers led her through the lobby, camera flashes exploded from every direction.
For the first time in her life, Margaret Carter couldn't control the story.
She had become it.
May you like
But as Monroe watched the patrol car pull away, her phone vibrated with a message from the medical examiner.
"Detective, you need to come back immediately. We found something unexpected in the autopsy report."
