Chapter 1 — The Operating Room

The emergency room doors slammed shut with a metallic crash that echoed through the hospital corridor.
Doctors and nurses rushed Emily Carter toward the operating room, shouting medical terms Ethan could barely understand. Blood soaked through the pale blue blanket covering her body, dripping onto the polished floor behind the gurney.
"BP is crashing!"
"Prep OR Three!"
"We're losing her!"
Ethan ran beside them until a nurse stopped him outside the double doors.
"I'm sorry, sir. You can't go any farther."
The doors swung closed, leaving him alone in a hallway that suddenly felt colder than winter.
Behind him, expensive heels clicked against the marble floor.
Margaret Carter.
His mother.
Her perfectly tailored cream-colored suit was wrinkled for the first time Ethan could remember, and tiny specks of Emily's blood stained one sleeve.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this," she whispered. "She slipped. We argued, and she lost her balance."
Ethan slowly turned toward her.
He had seen Emily lying motionless at the bottom of the staircase. He had heard his mother's first words—not "Call an ambulance," not "Help her."
Instead, she had hissed, "Put her back in the car. The police will ask questions."
Those words refused to leave his mind.
"You cared more about hiding what happened than saving my wife," he said quietly.
Margaret's eyes filled with panic.
"Ethan, listen to me. If people find out, everything this family has built will be destroyed."
He stared at her as though she were a complete stranger.
"No, Mother."
His voice was calm, almost frighteningly so.
"You destroyed this family the moment you pushed my pregnant wife."
Before Margaret could answer, the operating room doors burst open.
A surgeon stepped into the hallway, his surgical mask hanging loosely around his neck.

His expression told Ethan everything before he spoke.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Carter..."
