Chapter 12 – The Confession

Victoria buried her face in her hands.

For nearly a minute, the only sound in the interrogation room was her quiet sobbing. Detective Sarah Monroe didn't interrupt. She had learned long ago that silence often accomplished more than pressure.

Finally, Victoria looked up, her mascara streaked down her cheeks.

"I never wanted anyone to die."

Monroe leaned forward.

"Then tell us the truth."

Victoria nodded weakly.

"My aunt asked me to help teach Emily a lesson."

"What kind of lesson?"

"She said Emily had become arrogant... that she needed to be embarrassed in front of the board members so she'd finally leave Ethan."

Ramirez frowned.

"And the money?"

Victoria's shoulders slumped.

"I owed nearly three hundred thousand dollars."

She stared at the table.

"Gambling."

"My aunt offered to erase my debts."

"In exchange?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"She gave me a bottle of anti-anxiety pills."

Her voice cracked.

"She told me to crush two tablets into Emily's champagne. She said it would only make her sleepy and emotional."

Monroe remained expressionless.

"Did you know Margaret planned to confront Emily afterward?"

Victoria shook her head violently.

"No."

"I thought she'd yell at her... maybe make her look unstable in front of everyone."

Tears streamed down her face.

"I swear I didn't know she was going to push her."

Monroe wrote the statement carefully.

It didn't absolve Victoria.

But it changed everything.

This was no longer a spontaneous act of violence.

It was a conspiracy.

That evening, Monroe returned to the hospital.

Emily was sitting upright for the first time since the surgery, staring at a tiny pair of blue baby socks resting on the bedside table.

Monroe quietly explained Victoria's confession.

Emily listened without saying a word.

When the detective finished, Emily picked up one of the socks and held it in her palm.

"So they planned to break me..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"They just didn't care if my baby survived."

"No," Monroe said gently.

"I don't think they did."

A single tear rolled down Emily's cheek.

Then she looked at Ethan.

"I'm done being afraid."

For the first time since the tragedy, there was determination in her eyes.

"If I have to sit in that courtroom and tell the whole world what your mother did to us..."

She squeezed Ethan's hand.

"...then that's exactly what I'll do."

Outside the hospital room, Monroe's phone buzzed with a notification from the district attorney.

The grand jury had returned an indictment.
