Chapter 8 – Behind the Locked Door

Detective Sarah Monroe arrived at the Carter Foundation headquarters just after sunrise with a search warrant in hand. The elegant glass building looked untouched by the tragedy that had unfolded less than twenty-four hours earlier. Employees stood in silent clusters, whispering as uniformed officers entered through the front doors.
Margaret's executive office occupied the top floor.
Her longtime assistant unlocked the door with trembling hands.
"I've worked for Mrs. Carter for eighteen years," she said quietly. "I've never seen police here."
Monroe gave a polite nod before leading the search.
Every drawer was photographed.
Every cabinet was cataloged.
Most of the office looked exactly as expected—awards, financial reports, family portraits, and neatly organized files.
Then one detective noticed something unusual.
"Detective."
He pointed toward an antique bookshelf against the far wall.
"The measurements don't add up."
The shelf appeared deeper than the wall behind it.
After a closer inspection, officers found a hidden latch concealed beneath the bottom shelf.
A soft click echoed through the room.
The bookshelf slowly swung open.
Behind it was a narrow storage room.
Inside sat several locked filing cabinets, stacks of banker’s boxes, and a fireproof safe.
Monroe frowned.
"This wasn't listed on the building plans."
A locksmith quickly opened the first cabinet.
The room fell silent.
Inside were dozens of folders labeled with names.
Former employees.
Business partners.
Even members of the Carter family.
Each file contained private investigations, financial records, personal photographs, and handwritten notes.
One folder immediately caught Monroe's attention.
Emily Carter.
She opened it carefully.
The first page wasn't a financial document.
It was a list.
At the top, written in Margaret's unmistakable handwriting, were five chilling words.
Reasons Emily Must Leave Ethan.
Monroe slowly turned the page.
Beneath it were detailed plans to pressure Emily into filing for divorce, isolate her from friends, and convince Ethan that she was mentally unstable.
The final page stopped everyone cold.
Written in red ink across the bottom was a single sentence.
If she refuses to leave willingly... I'll make sure she has no choice.
Monroe closed the folder without speaking.
This was no longer a case about one violent argument.

Someone had been planning to destroy Emily's life for a very long time.
And somewhere inside the hidden room, the detectives suspected there were even darker secrets waiting to be uncovered.
