Chapter 14 – The Verdict

Emily sat quietly in the witness chair, her hands folded tightly in her lap.
The prosecutor smiled gently.
“Mrs. Carter, can you tell the jury what happened on the night of October 18?”
Emily took a slow breath.
She didn't exaggerate.
She didn't dramatize.
She simply told the truth.
She described the gala, the argument in the hallway, Margaret's insults, and the moment she turned away.
“I didn't want to fight anymore,” she said. “I just wanted to go home.”
The prosecutor nodded.
“And then?”
Emily looked directly at the jury.
“I felt two hands against my back.”
Her voice remained steady.
“She pushed me with everything she had.”
Several jurors glanced toward Margaret.
Emily continued.
“I remember reaching for the railing.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I remember thinking... Please let my baby be okay.”
The courtroom was silent.
When the defense attorney began his cross-examination, he attempted to suggest that Emily had lost her balance because of the sedative in her system.
Emily answered calmly.
“I didn't put that drug in my drink.”
“No.”
“Someone else did.”
The attorney had nowhere left to go.
Three days later, both sides delivered their closing arguments.
The jury disappeared into deliberations.
Hours passed.
Ethan and Emily sat together without speaking.
At exactly 5:17 p.m., the courtroom deputy announced,
“Will the jury please return to the courtroom?”
Everyone stood.
The foreperson handed the verdict form to the judge.
Judge Collins adjusted her glasses.
“On Count One, murder of an unborn child…”
She paused.
“We, the jury, find the defendant…”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Guilty.”
A quiet gasp swept through the courtroom.
The judge continued.
“On Count Two, conspiracy…”
“Guilty.”
“On Count Three, aggravated assault…”
“Guilty.”
Every remaining count received the same answer.
Margaret stood frozen as the verdict echoed through the room.
She turned toward Ethan one last time.
“I made a terrible mistake,” she whispered.
Ethan looked at her with tears in his eyes, but there was no anger left—only sadness.
“No, Mother.”
His voice was soft.
“You made a choice.”
The bailiffs stepped forward and placed handcuffs around Margaret's wrists.
As they led her toward the courtroom doors, she looked back one final time.
Neither Ethan nor Emily followed her with their eyes.
For them, that chapter of their lives had finally ended.
