Chapter 8 - THE GRANDFATHER’S VIDEO

Theodore looked older in the recording.

But not confused.

Not weak.

His eyes were sharp.

His voice steady.

“I have spent ninety-one years learning that wealth does not create character.”

“It merely gives character more room to reveal itself.”

Gabriel watched silently.

Elena held his hand.

Theodore continued.

“Vivienne believes blood gives her ownership over this family.”

“Cassandra believes inheritance is a birthright.”

“Victor believes money should reward obedience.”

“And Gabriel still believes he can protect everyone without choosing sides.”

Gabriel looked down.

The old man had known him well.

Then Theodore spoke Elena’s name.

“Elena.”

She stopped breathing.

“If Cassandra has destroyed your keepsakes, then events are moving exactly as I feared.”

Gabriel looked at her.

Theodore had predicted the attack.

“She will try to make you leave.”

“She may humiliate you.”

“She may threaten you.”

“Do not sign anything.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

Theodore leaned closer to the camera.

“The trust clause is not designed to enrich you.”

“It is designed to reveal them.”

Elijah paused the video.

“That explains the trap.”

Gabriel frowned.

“What trap?”

Elijah understood.

“Theodore knew Vivienne and Cassandra were desperate to remove Elena.”

“He made violence or coercion financially disastrous.”

“He expected greed to expose them.”

The video resumed.

“If any beneficiary violates Section Fourteen, Elena receives that person’s forfeited share.”

“However, Elena does not keep all of it.”

Elena looked surprised.

“Fifty percent automatically funds the Vale Protection Foundation.”

Gabriel had never heard of it.

Theodore explained.

The foundation would provide legal and financial support to spouses subjected to coercion inside powerful families.

Elena covered her mouth.

Theodore had turned the family’s worst behavior into a mechanism for protecting others.

Then his face became serious.

“One final warning.”

“If Vivienne returns, do not believe her first offer.”

“She will offer peace.”

“She will offer money.”

“She may even offer confession.”

“Her first offer will be bait.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Elena’s phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

$25,000,000.

Leave Gabriel tonight.

Sign the attached agreement.

The sender identified herself with one letter.

V.

Vivienne.

Gabriel stared at the message.

“She didn’t even wait an hour.”

Elena looked at him.

“What do we do?”

May you like

Elijah answered.

“We let her believe you’re considering it.”
