Chapter 17 - THE SECRET BETWEEN THEIR FAMILIES

Elena’s mother had died when Elena was nineteen.

Her name was Grace Hart.

She had worked as an accountant.

At least, that was what Elena always believed.

The photograph showed Grace standing beside Theodore thirty years earlier.

Both wore badges from Vale Meridian Holdings.

Elena looked at Elijah.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Gabriel turned the photograph over.

A date.

1996.

A handwritten message.

GRACE FOUND WHAT THE OTHERS MISSED.

Investigators searched old employment records.

Grace Hart had worked for Theodore.

Not as an ordinary accountant.

As a forensic auditor.

She discovered Victor and Vivienne’s earliest thefts.

Millions hidden through shell companies.

Theodore confronted them privately.

Then Grace resigned.

Why?

Another file explained.

She was threatened.

Grace left the Vale organization before Elena was born.

She never told her daughter.

But Theodore never forgot what she did.

Years later, when Gabriel introduced Elena to the family, Theodore recognized her surname immediately.

That was why he watched her carefully.

That was why he tested her with ten million dollars.

He wanted to know whether Grace’s daughter carried the same integrity.

Elena sat quietly after learning the truth.

“My mother protected this family.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“She protected what was right.”

“There’s a difference.”

Theodore’s original letter revealed the final piece.

He had planned to expose Vivienne and Victor after consolidating evidence.

The Meridian contingent trust was designed to protect the company if his children retaliated.

Elena was never supposed to become wealthy because of family violence.

She was supposed to become temporary guardian of the assets until independent trustees took control.

Her personal benefit was limited.

Most forfeited wealth would fund the protection foundation.

Elena felt relieved.

Gabriel noticed.

“You’re happy you’re not getting a billion dollars?”

“I never wanted a billion dollars.”

He laughed for the first time in days.

“That might be why Grandfather trusted you with it.”

Then police found Victor.

He had checked into a private medical clinic under another name.

He carried no weapon.

No passport.

Only a sealed envelope.

When agents arrested him, he said.

“I want a deal.”

“What do you have?”

They asked.

May you like

Victor smiled.

“Proof Vivienne killed Theodore.”
