Chapter 1 - THE SPLASH THAT CHANGED THE WILL

The swimming pool swallowed Cassandra Vale with a violent splash.

For one second, the entire estate went silent.

Then Cassandra came up screaming.

Her silk blouse clung to her shoulders.

One designer heel floated several feet away.

Mascara streaked beneath her eyes.

She slapped the water in fury.

“Gabriel!”

Gabriel Vale did not move toward her.

He was already on his knees beside his wife.

Elena sat trembling on the white marble floor.

Pieces of a broken wooden memory box surrounded her.

Old photographs were scattered near the sofa.

A pressed flower from her wedding bouquet had been crushed beneath Cassandra’s heel.

A silver bracelet that had belonged to Elena’s mother lay bent beside the fireplace.

Gabriel carefully placed one arm around Elena’s shoulders.

“Look at me.”

Elena lifted her eyes.

“I’m okay.”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You don’t have to say that anymore.”

Outside, Cassandra reached the edge of the pool.

“You threw me in!”

Gabriel finally looked toward her.

“You had your heel against my wife’s hand.”

“She attacked me first!”

Elena stared at her.

“I never touched you.”

Cassandra climbed onto the pool steps.

Water poured from her clothes.

“You think anyone is going to believe her over me?”

Gabriel’s expression changed.

That was when the strange smile appeared.

Not amusement.

Recognition.

Because three tiny red lights were glowing above the living-room ceiling.

Security cameras.

Cassandra followed his gaze.

Her face changed.

“What are those?”

Gabriel stood.

“Cameras.”

“You record family?”

“After Grandfather changed the trust, yes.”

Cassandra froze.

Elena looked up at him.

“You knew?”

“I knew she was planning something.”

Cassandra pointed at him.

“You’re lying.”

Gabriel walked toward the glass doors but stopped several feet from the pool.

“Theodore’s amended living trust contains a conduct clause.”

Cassandra’s mouth tightened.

“What conduct clause?”

Gabriel answered slowly.

“Any beneficiary who assaults, threatens, coerces, or intentionally destroys property belonging to Elena forfeits his or her inheritance.”

The color drained from Cassandra’s face.

“That’s impossible.”

“Elena becomes the successor beneficiary.”

Cassandra stared at him.

“No.”

Gabriel looked toward the broken photographs.

“You destroyed her mother’s bracelet.”

“You crushed her wedding keepsakes.”

“And then you stepped on her hand.”

Cassandra’s breathing became shallow.

“How much?”

Gabriel did not answer.

Elena did.

She had read the trust three months earlier.

“Your share was worth approximately thirty-eight million dollars.”

Cassandra staggered backward.

Gabriel added one final sentence.

“And the clause became irrevocable the moment Grandfather died last Tuesday.”

May you like

Cassandra’s eyes widened.

Nobody in the family had told her Theodore Vale was already dead.
