Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY

Victor’s evidence was devastating.

A recording.

Vivienne arguing with Theodore the night he died.

Theodore’s voice was weak but clear.

“You will not touch the Meridian trust.”

Vivienne answered.

“You should have protected your children.”

“I did.”

“I protected them from becoming you.”

Then a glass clinked.

Vivienne said.

“Take your medicine.”

Theodore replied.

“That isn’t mine.”

The recording ended.

Victor claimed he had placed a hidden microphone because he did not trust Vivienne.

Investigators asked why he did not stop her.

He said he was not there.

Nobody believed he was innocent.

But the recording supported the homicide investigation.

Vivienne’s attorneys began discussing a plea.

The press declared the Vale war over.

Gabriel and Elena returned home.

For one evening, the estate felt peaceful again.

They repaired the broken memory box.

The silver bracelet could not be restored perfectly.

Elena kept it anyway.

Gabriel picked up the crushed wedding flower.

“I can find another.”

“No.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“That wouldn’t be this one.”

He understood.

Some things cannot be replaced.

They can only be carried differently.

Then the doorbell rang.

A courier delivered a small package.

No return address.

Inside was one photograph.

Gabriel and Elena sleeping in their bedroom.

Taken through the window.

The timestamp was from the previous night.

Gabriel immediately called security.

Someone had been watching them after Vivienne’s arrest.

Then Cassandra called.

Her voice shook.

“Victor isn’t cooperating because he feels guilty.”

“He’s cooperating because he wants control.”

Elena looked at Gabriel.

“What control?”

Cassandra continued.

“Mom was always the distraction.”

“Victor wanted Meridian.”

“He let her take the risk.”

“He recorded her because he planned to use it against her.”

Gabriel understood.

Victor had positioned himself as witness instead of conspirator.

If Vivienne fell and Cassandra forfeited her interest, Victor could attempt to become the senior surviving family beneficiary.

The false victory vanished.

Elijah checked the trust.

Victor’s conduct clause had not yet been triggered.

Not officially.

If prosecutors failed to prove his role in coercion against Elena, he could still inherit hundreds of millions.

Then security discovered who had taken the bedroom photograph.
