Chapter 8 - THE GUARDIANSHIP HEARING
The hearing began at eight the next morning.
Vanessa appeared through a jail video connection.
Marcus sat inside the courtroom beside three attorneys.
He wore a charcoal suit and the expression of a concerned family friend.
Daniel sat with me.
His suspension from the company had already become public.
Reporters filled the hallway.
Marcus’s attorney spoke first.
“Mrs. Mercer has shown signs of confusion, paranoia, and emotional instability.”
He presented the edited videos Chloe had created.
He presented statements from Vanessa.
He presented a letter carrying Daniel’s electronic signature.
It claimed Daniel had privately expressed concern about my mental decline.
Daniel looked at the document.
“I never wrote that.”
The judge warned him not to interrupt.
Marcus’s attorney continued.
“Yesterday, Mrs. Mercer falsely accused her future daughter-in-law of theft and corporate conspiracy.”
“The emotional confrontation became so severe that police were called.”
My attorney, Evelyn Cross, stood.
“The police were called because Vanessa Cole assaulted Mrs. Mercer, forged documents, and attempted to steal voting shares.”
Marcus’s attorney smiled.
“Those accusations remain unproven.”
Evelyn placed the original garden recording into evidence.
The courtroom heard Vanessa say Daniel would believe any lie.
They watched her hold my shoulder.
They watched the scissors cut through my hair.
Then the cameras revealed the forged signatures.
The stolen jewelry.
The corporate plans.
Marcus’s face remained controlled.
The judge watched every minute.
When the video ended, Evelyn presented a medical evaluation completed that morning by two independent physicians.
I showed no sign of cognitive impairment.
Then she presented Robert’s trust clause.
The attempted guardianship petition activated the automatic transfer.
Marcus’s attorney stopped speaking.
The judge read the clause twice.
“If this petition alleges incapacity and is found to be fraudulent, the shares move to the employee trust?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
Marcus turned toward his attorneys.
They whispered urgently.
He stood.
“We withdraw the petition.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You already filed it.”
“The clause is active.”
The judge ordered the case transferred to the district attorney for fraud review.
He denied the guardianship request.
Then he issued a temporary order blocking the merger vote.
Marcus’s calm finally cracked.
“You cannot interfere with a corporate election based on family drama.”
The judge looked at him.
“This court is interfering because the proxy appears forged.”
Outside, reporters surrounded Daniel.
They asked whether his mother controlled his company.
They asked whether Vanessa was truly pregnant.
They asked whether Marcus had stolen millions.
Daniel said only one thing.
“My mother was not confused.”
“I was.”
At noon, the board announced it would proceed with the merger vote despite the court order.
Marcus claimed the meeting was taking place in another state beyond the judge’s authority.
Evelyn checked the corporate charter.
