Chapter 14 - THE EMPLOYEE CENTER

The backup center occupied an old manufacturing building outside Pittsburgh.
Two hundred employee trustees were scheduled to meet there.
Raymond had arranged the meeting through fake legal notices.
He wanted every major voting representative in one location.
Police evacuated the building before sunrise.
A search team found explosive devices beneath the conference floor.
The triggers were connected to a remote signal.
Raymond intended to destroy the employee trust physically.
Then the company shares would enter legal chaos.
Vale Dynamics could purchase the pieces cheaply.
The devices were disarmed.
But Raymond remained free.
Investigators searched Marcus’s financial records again.
A series of payments led to a nursing facility near Philadelphia.
One patient had lived there under the name Robert Miles.
The initials were R.M.
My heart began pounding.
Daniel looked at me.
“Dad?”
“No.”
“I buried him.”
“We saw the coffin,” Daniel said.
It had been closed because cancer had changed Robert’s appearance.
Only the funeral director and Raymond identified the body.
We traveled to the nursing facility.
An elderly man sat beside a window.
His face was thin.
His hair was completely white.
But when he lifted his eyes, I recognized him.
Robert.
My husband.
Alive.
I could not enter the room.
For thirty-eight years, I had kept my hair long because of the last time he braided it.
For seven years, I had spoken to his photograph every morning.
Now he sat less than ten feet away.
Daniel entered first.
“Dad?”
Robert looked at him without recognition.
Then his gaze moved toward me.
His lips trembled.
“Eleanor.”
I crossed the room.
He lifted one weak hand toward my hair.
Vanessa had cut it unevenly above my shoulders.
Robert touched the silver ends.
“What happened?”
I began crying.
“You were gone.”
He looked confused.
Raymond had arranged a false death after Robert’s final hospital admission.
Robert suffered a stroke during treatment.
He survived with memory damage.
Raymond moved him into private care.
He used Robert’s identity, passwords, and medical records to communicate with Marcus.
The man behind the R.M. messages was Raymond.
Robert had never betrayed us.
He had been stolen from us.
Daniel looked at the locked medical cabinet.
“Why keep him alive?”
Evelyn answered.
“His biometric authorization.”
Some trust actions required Robert’s face and voice.
Raymond used deepfake recordings but still needed periodic samples.
Robert gripped my hand.
“Raymond is coming.”
“When?”
May you like
“He said the company comes home tonight.”
The nursing facility lights went out.
