Chapter 7 - THE TRUST BENEATH THE COMPANY

Evelyn Cross arrived before midnight.
She was seventy-one years old and wore a dark red suit.
Two attorneys entered behind her carrying sealed cases.
Daniel recognized her from his childhood.
“You handled Dad’s will.”
“I handled the part he allowed you to see.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Evelyn placed a document on the kitchen table.
Mercer Systems had not been founded entirely by Daniel.
The original patents belonged to a family trust created by Robert and me.
Daniel’s operating company licensed them.
Marcus had spent years telling investors that Daniel personally owned the technology.
He did not.
Neither did I.
The trust held it for Daniel’s future children and for the employees who helped build the company.
The marriage to Vanessa would not have given her the patents.
The merger could not legally transfer them.
Daniel looked at me.
“You knew?”
“Only that your father created protections.”
“He never explained all of them.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Robert believed knowing less would make you harder to pressure.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“Everyone protected me by hiding the truth.”
The sentence hurt.
It was also fair.
Evelyn continued.
“The board may vote tomorrow.”
“But the trust can revoke Mercer Systems’ license immediately if fraud is proven.”
“What happens then?” Daniel asked.
“The company loses the right to sell its main product.”
“Marcus would inherit an empty shell.”
Daniel looked toward the police evidence bag containing Chloe’s phone.
“Can we prove fraud before the vote?”
Evelyn opened another case.
Inside were letters from Marcus’s father to Robert.
They described plans to use Mercer software to collect private medical data without consent.
Robert had refused.
Marcus later joined Daniel’s company under a different plan.
He would gain trust.
Control finances.
Create a crisis.
Then merge the company into Vale Dynamics.
Vanessa was part of that plan.
Evelyn had been monitoring unusual transfers for months.
“Why did you not warn me?” Daniel asked.
“I sent three letters.”
“I never received them.”
“Marcus’s office signed for each one.”
Daniel looked down.
The same pattern repeated.
Warnings entered his world.
Other people filtered them before he saw them.
Evelyn turned toward me.
“Robert left you another protection.”
“What?”
“If anyone attempts to declare you incompetent without an independent medical review, control of the legacy shares transfers automatically.”
“To whom?”
“To Daniel’s employees.”
Daniel stared at her.
Marcus’s plan to make me look unstable would destroy his own merger.
If the board accepted the false mental-health claim, my shares would move into an employee trust.
Marcus would lose control permanently.
Evelyn smiled slightly.
“Robert understood greed.”
A knock sounded at the front door.
A process server stood outside.
He delivered an emergency court petition filed by Vanessa’s attorney.
The petition claimed I suffered dementia.
May you like
It requested that Daniel be removed as my temporary decision-maker.
And it named Marcus Vale as emergency guardian of my financial assets.
