Chapter 10 - THE PRICE OF HIS LIFE’S WORK

The countdown began at nine minutes and fifty-nine seconds.

Daniel stared at the screens.

Mercer Systems employed more than eight hundred people.

Hospitals used its security software.

Small banks relied on its encryption.

Deleting the core code would not only destroy a company.

It could create vulnerabilities across thousands of networks.

“You cannot erase every backup,” Daniel said.

Marcus smiled.

“I do not need to.”

“I only need to corrupt the authentication keys.”

“Every client system will lock.”

I looked at him.

“You planned this before Vanessa cut my hair.”

“I planned for resistance.”

“Did she know?”

“She knew enough.”

“You promised her the house.”

“I promised her whatever kept her useful.”

Daniel looked at his former friend.

“Was she ever pregnant?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her to lie?”

“She volunteered.”

Marcus touched the gun.

“Vanessa wanted a rich husband.”

“I wanted the company.”

“Chloe wanted money.”

“Everyone received a simple role.”

“What was mine?” I asked.

“The sentimental widow.”

“The old woman who signed papers because she feared being alone.”

I looked toward the countdown.

Eight minutes remained.

“You studied everyone except Robert.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Robert is dead.”

“Yes.”

“But the backup he built is not.”

Evelyn had given me a second device before we entered.

It looked like an ordinary brooch.

Inside was a hardware key connected to the family trust.

Robert had required the company’s core system to maintain an offline recovery vault.

Marcus did not know the vault could restore every authentication key.

His deletion threat was dramatic.

Not final.

I needed him to believe otherwise until police entered through the server tunnels.

I stepped closer.

“I will sign.”

Daniel turned.

“Mom.”

I looked at him.

“Your father taught me not to confuse pride with strength.”

Marcus slid a document across the desk.

I read every line.

The transfer gave Vale Dynamics the patents.

It also granted Marcus personal immunity from any prior financial action.

He expected a signature to erase crimes.

I picked up the pen.

The countdown showed six minutes.

Then I changed one word.

I wrote TRUSTEE beneath my name instead of OWNER.

Marcus saw it.

“What are you doing?”

“I cannot transfer what I do not personally own.”

“You control it.”

“I protect it.”

“That is different.”

His hand moved toward the gun.

Daniel pushed the laptop off the desk.

The countdown screen disappeared.

Marcus grabbed the weapon.

I pressed the brooch.

The building’s emergency shutters closed.

Robert’s recovery vault activated.

Every server began isolating from Marcus’s network.

He fired toward the control panel.

The bullet struck glass.

Police entered through the side corridor.

Marcus seized Daniel by the collar and pressed the gun beneath his jaw.

“Stop.”

Officers froze.

Marcus backed toward the server room.

Then Vanessa’s voice came through the lobby speakers.

“Marcus.”

He stopped.

May you like

She was calling from the county jail through a police-controlled line.

“I gave them everything.”
