Chapter 18 - THE TRIAL OF VANESSA COLE
Vanessa’s trial began eight months after the garden incident.
She faced charges for fraud, assault, forgery, conspiracy, theft, and unlawful access to medical records.
Marcus and Raymond faced separate federal trials.
Chloe testified first.
She described the videos.
The payments.
The haircut.
The plan to humiliate me at the bridal shower.
Vanessa’s attorney called Chloe jealous and unreliable.
Chloe accepted responsibility.
“I wanted money.”
“I wanted my sister’s approval.”
“I helped her hurt someone who had never hurt me.”
Her honesty made the defense weaker.
Daniel testified next.
He described hearing Vanessa at the garden gate.
The fake pregnancy.
The company plot.
The fertility scheme.
Vanessa watched him without blinking.
Her attorney asked whether Daniel still loved her.
“No.”
“Did you ever?”
“I loved the person she performed.”
Vanessa’s expression finally changed.
Then I took the stand.
The prosecutor showed the jury my silver hair inside the wooden box.
He asked why I kept it.
“My husband braided it during his illness.”
“I kept it because memory mattered to me.”
“What did Vanessa know?”
“Everything.”
“Why did she cut it?”
“To prove that something meaningful to me had no value if she decided otherwise.”
Vanessa’s attorney stood.
“Mrs. Mercer, you suffered no permanent physical injury.”
“No.”
“Your hair will grow.”
“Yes.”
“So this case is really about hurt feelings.”
I looked toward the jury.
“No.”
“It is about a woman who believed humiliation was useful evidence.”
“She wanted my grief to look like confusion.”
“She wanted my resistance to look like instability.”
“The scissors were not the whole crime.”
“They were the moment she became too confident to hide the rest.”
The hidden-camera footage played.
Vanessa’s laughter filled the courtroom.
You old-fashioned woman.
Daniel will never believe you.
The jury watched Daniel appear beneath the rose arch.
They saw Vanessa’s face when she realized he had heard everything.
The verdict came two days later.
Guilty on every major count.
Vanessa received twelve years.
Chloe received probation and community service because of her cooperation.
Marcus was convicted of corporate espionage, fraud, conspiracy, and attempted extortion.
He received twenty-seven years.
Raymond received thirty-five years for kidnapping Robert, identity fraud, attempted murder, and corporate theft.
As officers led Vanessa away, she looked at Daniel.
“You would have married me if you came home one hour later.”
Daniel answered quietly.
