Chapter 5 - The Nurse They Tried to Silence

Claire laughed once.
It was not amusement.
It was disbelief.
"Twenty-two years."
She stared at her phone.
"I've worked here twenty-two years."
"Reason?" Rachel asked.
"Violation of patient privacy."
Emily shook her head.
"You protected me."
Claire looked at her.
"Apparently that was the violation."
Rachel immediately told Claire not to sign anything.
Mercy General's chief administrative officer arrived twenty minutes later.
Thomas Bell.
His name was on the memory card.
Six transfers.
Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.
Bell entered with two hospital attorneys.
He wore the expression of a man arriving to solve an inconvenience.
"Colonel Hart."
"Mr. Bell."
"This situation has become disruptive."
"My daughter being assaulted was disruptive."
One attorney shifted uncomfortably.
Bell ignored the remark.
"We are moving Mrs. Prescott to another facility."
Rachel stepped forward.
"No."
Bell looked at her.
"And you are?"
"Rachel Monroe."
She handed him her card.
"Counsel for Emily Hart Prescott."
Bell's confidence slipped.
Rachel continued.
"Mrs. Prescott has not requested a transfer."
"Her attending physician has not ordered one."
"And your hospital is now part of an active federal inquiry concerning attempted interference with a victim and possible falsification of medical documentation."
Bell stared at her.
"That is an outrageous accusation."
Rachel glanced at the laptop.
"Would you like me to show you the wire transfers?"
Bell stopped talking.
That silence said more than denial.
Agent Brooks asked him to remain available for questioning.
Bell left without another word.
Claire watched him go.
"I always thought he was a coward."
She looked at Emily.
"I didn't know he was bought."
Emily began telling Claire about the Blue Room.
Claire listened.
Then she said something unexpected.
"I've seen Samantha Reed."
Every person in the room turned.
"When?"
"Two years ago."
"Here?"
Claire nodded.
"Emergency department."
She had been working overtime.
Samantha came in after midnight with a cut across her forehead and bruises on her wrists.
She repeatedly asked staff not to contact the Prescotts.
Then Thomas Bell arrived personally.
"So did Captain Monroe."
Claire looked at the floor.
"I should have questioned it."
"What happened?" Agent Brooks asked.
"They said Samantha was experiencing a psychiatric crisis."
"She denied it."
"She begged us not to release her."
"But there was an emergency custody order."
"Signed by a judge."
Rachel's face tightened.
"Name?"
Claire answered.
"Judge Robert Holloway."
Calvin searched the memory card.
HOLLOWAY.
The folder was enormous.
Photographs.
Payments.
Messages.
Court orders.
Agent Lane read one document.
"Holloway signed emergency orders involving seven people connected to the Prescotts."
Claire whispered.
"Samantha was one of them."
Emily looked terrified.
"So was I going to be another?"
Nobody answered immediately.
We did not need to.
That was exactly what the PSYCHIATRIC HOLD IF NECESSARY notation had meant.
Margaret had a system.
Discredit the victim.
Find a cooperative doctor.
Get a cooperative judge.
Turn accusations into symptoms.
Turn fear into instability.
Turn imprisonment into treatment.
Then make the person disappear from public view.
Agent Brooks received a call from the team sent to the coordinates recovered from Samantha's file.
She listened.
"When?"
Another pause.
"Secure the entire scene."
She ended the call.
I stood.
"Did they find Samantha?"
Brooks looked at Emily first.
Then at me.
"The cabin is empty."
My heart dropped.
But Brooks continued.
"It wasn't abandoned."
"There was warm food on the stove."
"A lamp was on."
"And investigators found fresh tire tracks leaving through the rear road."
Rachel asked the question.
"How fresh?"
Brooks answered.
"Less than an hour."
Someone had reached Samantha before the FBI.
May you like
Someone had known they were coming.
There was a leak.
