For three minutes, nobody knew what Ethan had done.

Payment schedules.
And a detailed index explaining where every original could be found.
Ethan had distributed the evidence against his own family to hundreds of people.
He stared at his phone as news alerts began appearing.
His face drained of color.
Margaret understood first.
"What did you do?"
Ethan looked at her.
"You said Crown was insurance."
"It was."
"Against us."
She struck him across the face.
Cameras captured it.
For the first time, the Prescott family began destroying itself in public.
Agent Brooks arrested Ethan.
The ballroom emptied under federal supervision.
Some guests left through side doors.

Margaret hated that more than losing money.
She lost control.

"I thought I would feel better."
I understood.

A headline did not restore sleep.
I sat beside her.
"You don't have to feel anything on schedule."
She leaned against me.
"Do you think I'll ever stop being afraid when doors lock?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"One unlocked door at a time."
She smiled faintly.
Then Rachel entered.
Her expression erased that smile.
"What happened?"
"Voss accessed a restricted federal database before he disappeared."
Agent Brooks followed her.
"He searched for three people."
Samantha Reed.
Emily Hart Prescott.
And Colonel Victoria Hart.
Emily looked at me.
"Why you?"
Brooks handed me a printout.
Voss had accessed a classified personnel index connected to one of my former assignments.
Not the files themselves.
Only the index.
Rachel stared at me.
"What did you work on?"
I answered carefully.
"Procurement oversight."
Brooks's face hardened.
"Did you ever investigate a contractor named Northstar Strategic Systems?"
I remembered immediately.
"Yes."
Years earlier, Northstar had been removed from a defense subcontract after irregular payments appeared in an audit.
Brooks placed another document beside the first.
Northstar Strategic Systems had later been purchased through shell entities.
The final beneficial owner was hidden.
Until Crown opened.
Margaret Prescott controlled twenty-eight percent.
Alan Voss controlled twelve.
And the remaining shares belonged to Charles Prescott.
