Chapter 14 - The Meeting I Refused to Attend Alone

The address led to an abandoned textile warehouse.

I did not go alone.

I also did not tell the sender that.

Agent Brooks selected the surveillance plan.

I wore no weapon.

No body armor visible beneath my clothes.

Just jeans, a jacket, and the same calm I had relied on through thirty years of difficult rooms.

Emily wanted to come.

Absolutely not.

She hated my answer.

I was glad.

Anger meant fear was no longer controlling her.

At 11:04 p.m., I entered the warehouse.

One light burned near the center.

A woman stepped from behind a column.

Thin.

Exhausted.

Dark hair cut short.

Samantha Reed.

Alive.

I stopped.

She looked at me.

"You brought them."

"Yes."

She almost smiled.

"Good."

I had passed her test.

Anyone willing to walk alone into that building after everything we knew would have been reckless.

Samantha wanted to know whether I valued rescue more than drama.

She sat on a wooden crate.

"I don't have long."

"You're safe now."

"No."

She looked toward the shadows where she knew agents were positioned.

"Nobody is safe yet."

She handed me a small metal key.

"Safety deposit box."

"What's inside?"

"The originals."

"Of what?"

"Everything Margaret couldn't erase."

Samantha's eyes filled.

"Charles tried to stop her."

"Too late."

"He created the first system."

"He has to answer for that."

"But Margaret turned it into something else."

"She stopped protecting the family and started controlling everyone around it."

"Why didn't you go directly to federal authorities?"

"I did."

Agent Brooks stepped from the shadows.

Samantha looked at her.

"Not you."

Brooks stopped.

"Who?"

Samantha shook her head.

"I don't know his real name."

"He said he worked with a federal task force."

"He had credentials."

"He knew details nobody outside the investigation should know."

"What happened?"

"I gave him one copied file."

"Three hours later Margaret called me."

Everyone went still.

That explained the leak before Calvin.

Someone with federal access had been feeding Margaret information for years.

Samantha handed Brooks a photograph.

The unknown man from Margaret's video was finally visible.

Brooks stared at it.

Her face became cold.

"Deputy Director Alan Voss."

Rachel whispered.

"FBI?"

Brooks shook her head.

"Department of Justice."

Voss oversaw regional organized-crime coordination and had access to sensitive investigations across several states.

One compromised official could explain why complaints vanished.

Why warrants leaked.

Why Samantha never knew whom to trust.

Brooks immediately moved Samantha into federal protective custody under a compartmentalized team outside Voss's chain.

But Samantha had one more warning.

"Margaret doesn't trust Voss either."

"She recorded him."

"She keeps insurance on everyone."

"Where?"

Samantha looked at me.

"Inside the Prescott Foundation gala."

Rachel frowned.

"The building?"

"No."

"The event."

The annual Prescott Foundation gala was scheduled for the following evening.

Eight hundred guests.

Judges.

Business leaders.

Politicians.

Reporters.

Donors.

Margaret had refused to cancel it.

Samantha explained why.

"She plans to release manipulated files during the gala."

"She'll frame Emily as an extortionist."

"She'll frame Victoria as using military contacts to threaten civilians."

"And then she'll destroy the Blue Room servers."

Agent Brooks asked how.

May you like

Samantha answered.

"Fire."
