Chapter 13 - Margaret's Card
The MARGARET card was cleaner than RUN.
Almost elegant.
No thousands of scattered files.
No random backups.
Only twelve videos.
Samantha had curated them deliberately.
The first showed Margaret paying Judge Holloway.
The second showed her ordering Captain Monroe to intercept Samantha's original police complaint.
The third showed her telling Thomas Bell to alter hospital records.
The fourth showed Ethan dragging Emily toward the guesthouse while Brandon locked the door.
I stopped watching after that.
Agent Brooks did not.
She had to.
The fifth video showed Charles confronting Margaret.
The sixth showed Margaret ordering Blackwood staff to sedate him.
The seventh changed everything.
Margaret stood inside the Blue Room talking to an unknown man.
His face remained outside the camera frame.
"You promised me immunity," Margaret said.
The man answered.
"I promised protection while you remained useful."
Rachel leaned closer.
Margaret looked furious.
"I have judges."
"I have police."
"I have media."
The man laughed.
"You have local people."
"I have Washington."
I watched Agent Brooks.
Her expression had changed.
"Recognize the voice?"
She did not answer.
Video eight showed money transfers to a consulting company in Virginia.
Video nine showed a list of federal contract numbers.
Video ten showed photographs of senior government officials entering private Prescott events.
That did not prove criminal involvement.
But it explained why Samantha had been terrified.
The network might extend far beyond Charlotte.
Video eleven showed Samantha herself confronting Margaret.
"You built this because you were afraid of losing control."
Margaret smiled.
"Control is the only thing people respect."
Samantha answered.
"No."
"Fear is the only thing you understand."
Margaret stepped closer.
"You think Charles can save you?"
"No."
Samantha looked toward the hidden camera.
"I think the truth can."
Then came the final video.
Samantha sat alone.
"If Emily has RUN, she may also eventually find this."
"If she does, tell her I'm sorry."
Emily began shaking.
Samantha continued.
"I knew they were watching her."
"I knew Ethan was isolating her."
"I tried to get proof before approaching her."
"I waited too long."
Emily cried openly.
Samantha looked directly into the lens.
"If Victoria Hart is watching this, your daughter is stronger than they think."
"And Margaret is more frightened of you than she will ever admit."
I did not feel powerful hearing that.
I felt responsible.
Samantha had risked everything to help my child.
The final line changed the investigation again.
"If I disappear after leaving this recording, don't look for me at the estate."
"Look where Margaret buries her reputation."
The screen went black.
Nobody understood.
Then Claire, listening by phone, whispered.
"The Prescott Memorial Gardens."
It was a private cemetery funded by the family foundation.
Publicly, it honored deceased foundation employees and longtime family staff.
Julia Bennett's memorial plaque was there.
So was Samantha's mother's.
Agents obtained a search warrant.
At dusk, investigators entered a maintenance building behind the cemetery.
They found no bodies.
They found files.
Thousands of them.
Original blackmail photographs.
Cash ledgers.
Medical records.
Court documents.
And a locked room containing personal belongings from people the Prescotts had controlled.
Julia's purse.
Samantha's old phone.
Emily's missing car keys.
My daughter stared at the photograph of those keys.
"They kept trophies."
But the most important discovery was inside a refrigerated evidence cabinet.
A vial of Samantha Reed's blood.
Collected three days earlier.
Agent Brooks looked at the lab label.
It came from a private clinic.
Samantha had not been bleeding in the car because someone necessarily injured her.
The blood may have been planted.
Rachel understood immediately.
"She staged it."
Brooks nodded.
"Samantha may still be running."
Then my phone received a text.
Unknown number.
This time the message contained no threat.
Only an address.
