Chapter 12 - The Man Beside the Laptop

Calvin did not run.
That almost made it worse.
Agent Brooks asked him to step away from the computer.
He slowly raised his hands.
Emily stared at him.
"You helped us."
Calvin looked ashamed.
"I'm sorry."
Rachel's expression hardened.
"How much did they pay you?"
"Nothing."
That surprised everyone.
Brooks searched him.
His phone contained messages from an unknown sender.
Photographs followed.
Calvin's teenage son walking to school.
His wife leaving work.
His mother entering church.
The Prescotts had not purchased Calvin.
They had terrified him.
"The first message came yesterday," he said.
"They told me if I didn't disclose the cabin coordinates, my son would disappear."
He looked at me.
"I believed them."
I understood fear.
But understanding was not absolution.
"Why didn't you tell Brooks?"
"Because they sent me a photograph taken inside my son's bedroom."
Agent Brooks's face tightened.
That changed the room.
This was no longer just corruption.
Someone had physically entered Calvin's home.
He admitted sending the Blackwood location too.
But he insisted he had not leaked everything.
Agent Brooks believed part of his statement because operational details had leaked before Calvin joined us.
There was another source.
Calvin was removed from the case.
His devices were seized.
His family was moved under protection.
Before leaving, he gave Brooks one final piece of information.
"The Crown directory has a hidden timer."
Rachel frowned.
"What kind of timer?"
"If certain files aren't accessed regularly, encrypted packages are automatically transmitted."
"To whom?"
"I don't know."
Calvin looked at Emily.
"But the next transmission is scheduled for midnight tomorrow."
The card was not merely storage.
It was part of a dead-man system.
Someone had designed it so the truth would keep moving even if the person carrying it disappeared.
Samantha.
That afternoon, Julia Bennett agreed to speak to Emily through a secure call.
The moment Emily saw her face, she cried.
"I'm sorry."
Julia shook her head.
"You don't owe me anything."
"Samantha came back because of me."
"Samantha came back because she was tired of running."
Julia explained what had happened.
Two years earlier, Samantha discovered Margaret's network.
She tried reporting it.
Captain Monroe intercepted the complaint.
Judge Holloway authorized her detention.
Charles secretly arranged her escape from Blackwood.
For two years Samantha moved between safe locations.
Then she learned Ethan was doing to Emily exactly what Margaret had done to other women.
So she returned.
"She planted the RUN card where she thought you might find it," Julia said.
Emily stared at the screen.
"The safe."
Julia nodded.
"Samantha knew Ethan left it open when he drank."
My daughter began crying.
Julia continued.
"She couldn't contact you directly."
"Every phone around that family was watched."
"So she took a chance."
The card had not been stolen randomly.
It had been left for Emily.
The word RUN was not a label.
It was an instruction.
Suddenly Agent Brooks entered.
"We found Samantha's car."
Everyone stood.
"Where?"
"Parking garage near the airport."
"Any sign of her?"
Brooks hesitated.
"Blood on the driver's seat."
Emily covered her mouth.
I felt my stomach drop.
Then Brooks continued.
"And a second memory card taped underneath the steering wheel."
Rachel whispered.
"What does it say?"
Brooks placed a photograph on the table.

The word scratched into the second card was not RUN.
It was MARGARET.
