Chapter 8 - THE DEMONSTRATION TAPE

The video had been recorded by Willow’s mother, Sarah Donovan.
She often filmed Michael’s unusual repair projects.
The footage showed the damaged Sterling prototype lifted above the shop floor.
Michael explained the heat problem.
He installed the revised control module.
The vehicle completed a stress test without overheating.
Richard shook Michael’s hand.
On camera, he said, “This invention will save my company.”
Lucas stood behind him.
He laughed and replied, “Then we had better make Michael part of the family.”
At the time, the sentence sounded affectionate.
Years later, it sounded like strategy.
The video spread through financial news.
Sterling Mobility’s stock fell another twenty-three percent.
Three manufacturers suspended royalty payments until ownership could be verified.
Federal securities regulators opened an investigation into whether the Sterlings had misled investors.
The company’s most recent bond offering described the technology as internally developed.
If that statement was knowingly false, Richard and Lucas could face criminal charges.
Willow expected satisfaction.
Instead, she felt grief.
Thousands of employees depended on Sterling Mobility.
Engineers, assembly workers, drivers, office staff, and dealership employees had not forged the assignment.
She asked Michael whether he intended to destroy the company.
“No.”
“I intend to remove my work from the control of people who stole it.”
“What happens to everyone else?”
“That depends on the board.”
Michael proposed a settlement structure.
Sterling Mobility would acknowledge his ownership.
A new independent company would license the system back at a fair rate.
Unpaid royalties would be partly converted into employee-protection shares rather than cash.
Richard and Lucas would surrender voting control.
The board responded with cautious interest.
Richard responded with rage.
He arrived at Donovan Auto Repair after closing time.
Cameras captured his black sedan entering the lot.
Michael stood inside the open service bay.
Richard walked toward him alone.
“You planned this,” Richard said.
“No.”
“I prepared for the possibility that you would never become honest.”
“You are destroying a company that employs eighteen thousand people.”
“You used those employees as a shield around your theft.”
Richard removed a check from his coat.
The amount was one hundred million dollars.
“Take it.”
“Withdraw the claim.”
“Tell the public the documents were misunderstood.”
Michael did not touch the check.
“You mocked my hands in front of my daughter.”
Richard looked confused.
“I never—”
“You taught your son that honest work made me lesser.”
“You used my silence to humiliate her.”
“This is not about money anymore.”
Richard’s face became hard.
“It was always about money.”
Michael glanced toward the camera mounted above the service bay.
“No.”
“For you, it was about believing you could decide what everything was worth.”
Richard followed his gaze.
He realized the entire conversation had been recorded.
Then Lucas’s car entered the lot.

He did not come to negotiate.
He carried a gasoline can.
