Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO COULD NOT LOSE

Police placed Michael under protection.
Willow moved temporarily into a secure apartment with Helena.
Lucas had no access to money under his own name.
He still knew family properties, private accounts, and loyal employees.
Several former Sterling security officers disappeared after his escape.
Detective Brooks believed he intended to leave the country.
Michael disagreed.
“Lucas does not believe he has lost.”
“He believes there is one conversation that can restore everything.”
“With whom?”
“You.”
Willow received the call that evening.
Lucas sounded calm.
“Come to the old Sterling assembly plant.”
“No.”
“I have your father’s original prototype.”
“You have a machine.”
“I have the evidence Richard never saw.”
“What evidence?”
“Proof Michael stole the design from Sterling engineers.”
Willow knew it was a lie.
Yet Lucas believed she still needed to hear him explain.
That need had controlled her for years.
Every betrayal came with a promise that the next conversation would make it understandable.
“I’m not coming.”
Lucas became quiet.
“I never meant to hit you that hard.”
“There was no acceptable amount.”
“You embarrassed me.”
“You planned the slap.”
“Mother exaggerated.”
“The recording is clear.”
His voice sharpened.
“You think your father is innocent?”
“He used you to take my company.”
“It was never only yours.”
“It was supposed to be.”
There it was.
The marriage.
The gallery.
The technology.
The trust.
Lucas viewed every shared thing as something waiting to become his alone.
He told Willow that Michael had been taken.
A photograph arrived.
Michael sat tied to a chair inside the abandoned assembly plant.
A bruise marked his forehead.
Willow’s chest tightened.
Lucas had reached him despite police protection.
A security officer assigned to Michael had accepted money.
“Come alone.”
“Bring the original contract.”
“If the police enter, your father dies.”
Willow contacted Detective Brooks through the emergency application already installed on her phone.
She agreed to the meeting while officers traced the call.
Helena tried to stop her.
“You cannot go inside.”
“I have to keep him talking.”
“From outside.”
Willow looked at the photograph.
Lucas had positioned Michael near the old prototype vehicle.
Fuel containers surrounded the chair.
He intended to destroy both the witness and the technology in one fire.
Willow wore a concealed microphone.
Detective Brooks placed a tracker inside the contract folder.
Before entering the plant, Willow called Amanda.
“If something happens, release everything.”
Amanda answered firmly.
“Nothing is happening except his arrest.”
Willow stepped through the broken factory doors.
Lucas waited beneath a row of dead assembly lights.

He held the same style of champagne flute used at the anniversary.
“I thought we should finish our toast.”
