Chapter 2 - THE VIDEO FROM THE BALLROOM

Police officers arrived before Richard could answer.

The hotel’s security director led them through the ballroom.

The laughter ended as uniforms crossed the marble floor.

Detective Naomi Brooks introduced herself to Willow on the terrace.

She photographed the mark on Willow’s face and asked whether she wanted to file a formal complaint.

“Yes.”

Lucas interrupted.

“My wife is upset.”

“She does not understand the consequences of making a public accusation.”

Detective Brooks turned toward him.

“Are you attempting to influence a witness in front of me?”

Lucas stopped speaking.

Richard demanded privacy.

Brooks refused.

The hotel preserved security footage from every camera surrounding the ballroom.

Unfortunately, the slap had occurred behind a floral installation, outside the clearest angle.

Lucas’s attorney arrived within twenty minutes.

He suggested the contact may have been accidental.

Then Helena appeared.

She pushed through the guests holding her phone.

“I recorded it.”

Willow looked at her.

“You were filming?”

“I started when Richard grabbed your arm.”

Helena handed the phone to Detective Brooks.

The video showed Richard insulting Michael.

It captured Lucas demanding an apology.

It captured the threat.

“You will apologize, or I will make you.”

Then his hand crossed Willow’s face.

The sound echoed through the recording.

So did the laughter.

Several guests looked away when the detective replayed it.

Others began leaving through the side exits.

Brooks stopped them and requested names.

Michael watched every person who claimed not to have seen anything.

The Sterling family’s attorneys began collecting phones and whispering instructions to employees.

Richard approached the orchestra conductor and ordered the music to resume.

The conductor refused.

The ballroom remained silent.

Willow removed her wedding ring.

She placed it inside Lucas’s empty champagne glass.

“This is not a negotiation.”

Lucas stared at the ring.

“You’ll come home tomorrow.”

“No.”

“You always do.”

The certainty in his voice hurt more than the slap.

He believed he understood the limits of her courage because he had spent five years designing them.

Michael placed his jacket around Willow’s shoulders.

As they walked toward the exit, Richard spoke behind them.

“You think one video can harm us?”

Michael turned.

“No.”

“The video harms your son.”

“The documents I’m releasing at midnight will harm the empire.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“You signed a confidentiality agreement.”

“You violated it first.”

“How?”

Michael looked at Willow’s swollen cheek.

“The agreement required the Sterling family to act in good faith toward every member of the Donovan family.”

“Your son just made six hundred people witnesses to your breach.”

Willow stopped walking.

“What documents?”

May you like

Michael’s eyes softened.

“The truth about what built Sterling Mobility.”
