Celeste explained the purpose of the anniversary party.
Richard had learned that Michael planned to contact a patent attorney after the new year.
He feared Willow might support her father once she discovered the theft.
Lucas needed to separate them permanently.
The party was designed to create a public conflict.
Richard would provoke Willow by insulting Michael.
Lucas expected her to respond angrily.
A public outburst could be used to describe her as unstable.
Then Lucas would announce a temporary separation.
During that separation, he planned to seize the gallery lease, freeze joint accounts, and pressure Willow into signing a settlement.
The settlement would require Michael to waive all claims against Sterling Mobility.
Willow’s humiliation was not an unintended scandal.
It was leverage.
The plan failed when Lucas slapped her in front of the cameras.
He transformed a carefully staged insult into visible abuse.
The laughter came from guests who believed the Sterling family controlled every consequence.
Some had attended similar events for years.
They had watched employees, spouses, and rivals be humiliated.
They laughed because silence was the price of belonging.

Another was a banker who watched Lucas threaten to make her apologize.
A third was a woman Willow barely knew.
Her name was Claire Benton.
She had been married to Richard’s younger brother.
“He hit me at a family dinner twenty years ago,” Claire said.
“Richard convinced everyone I had provoked him.”
The younger brother later died.
Claire never returned to the family.
She possessed letters showing that violence and intimidation had protected Sterling power for decades.
The family empire was not simply wealthy.
It was organized around fear.
The special committee expanded its investigation.
Employees described destroyed careers.
Contractors described threats.
Former assistants described Richard throwing objects during meetings.
A retired accountant provided copies of payments made to silence complaints.
The Sterling crest had hidden years of misconduct.
Willow returned to the gallery after police restored access.
The white orchids from the anniversary had been delivered there as an apology from the hotel.
She stared at them for a long time.
Then she gave them to a nearby hospital.
She replaced them with a sculpture made from twisted steel, broken glass, and an old mechanic’s wrench.
