Chapter 2 - THE MESSAGE

Thomas lowered his phone.
His face had turned pale.
“What did you do?”
I said nothing.
His oldest son stepped forward.
“You think freezing our accounts scares us?”
His phone rang again.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“They canceled the contract.”
Another son stared at his screen.
“My partners just resigned.”
A third whispered:
“They locked the building.”
Thomas looked at me.
“You can't do this.”
I walked toward the ICU doors.
“You were right about one thing.”
He followed.
“You said money doesn't make a man dangerous.”
I turned.
“It doesn't.”
His confidence returned for half a second.
Then I finished.
“Authority does.”
The ICU doors opened.
A security team entered the hallway.
They wore plain black suits.
No uniforms.
No badges visible.
But every officer in the emergency department immediately recognized them.
Thomas looked around.
“Who are these men?”
His voice was shaking now.
I answered quietly.
“My security division.”
He laughed nervously.
“You run security?”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I run the organization that security reports to.”
He stared.
For years, I had maintained two lives.
In public, I was Andrew Carter.
CEO.
Investor.
Quiet businessman.
Behind closed doors, I was the chairman of a private network that had spent decades protecting witnesses, dismantling criminal organizations, and quietly assisting federal agencies when official channels became compromised.
The public knew nothing.
Even Clara knew almost nothing.
I had wanted her to have a normal life.
A normal husband.
A normal home.
A normal marriage.
Now normal was gone.
Thomas stepped closer.
“You killed my family.”
I stared at him.
“You killed your granddaughter.”
He flinched.
That was the first time I saw something resembling regret.
But it lasted only a second.
His youngest son moved toward me.
“You better watch yourself.”
Two security men stepped between us.
The young man stopped.
I looked him in the eyes.
“You should have watched yourself.”
He swallowed.
Then a nurse came running.
“Mr. Carter.”
I turned.
“Your wife is awake.”
Everything else disappeared.
I hurried into the ICU.
Clara's eyes opened slowly.
She looked terrified.
Then she saw me.
“Andrew?”
I took her hand.
“I’m here.”
Her lips trembled.
“I’m sorry.”
I leaned closer.
“For what?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Our baby.”
I closed my eyes.
“You don't apologize for surviving.”
She squeezed my hand.
Then she whispered:
“They're going to come for you.”
“Who?”
Her eyes moved toward the door.
“My father.”
I looked at her.
“He already came.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
Her breathing became shallow.
“He wasn't the one who ordered it.”
I froze.
“Who was?”
Clara stared at me.
Then she whispered:
May you like
“Your own father.”
