Chapter 15 - THE YEARS OF HEALING

The trials lasted years.

The names became history.

The city changed.

The Mercer family disappeared from public life.

My father's empire became evidence.

The Carter name stopped being feared.

And that was exactly what I wanted.

Clara recovered physically.

Emotionally, it took longer.

Some nights she woke from nightmares.

Some mornings she couldn't look at her stomach without crying.

I never told her to move on.

There was no moving on from losing Emily.

There was only moving forward with her.

We visited a quiet memorial garden.

A small stone carried our daughter's name.

Emily Carter.

Beloved before she was born.

Clara placed flowers there every month.

I went with her.

One winter morning, she surprised me.

“I want to try again.”

I looked at her.

She smiled.

“Not to replace Emily.”

“Never.”

“But because I still believe our family deserves another chance.”

I took her hands.

“Whatever happens, I'll be here.”

Months later, Clara became pregnant again.

This time, we told no one outside our closest friends.

We traveled.

We rested.

We protected our peace.

The pregnancy was difficult.

Every appointment terrified me.

But then, one spring morning, a tiny heartbeat filled the room.

Clara cried.

I cried.

The doctor smiled.

“Strong heartbeat.”

I looked at Clara.

She whispered:

“Emily would be happy.”

I kissed her forehead.

Maybe she would.

Eight months later, our son was born.

We named him Samuel.

We kept Emily's name.

We never replaced her.

May you like

She remained part of our family.
