Chapter 18 - TWENTY YEARS LATER

Twenty years after the attack, the city barely remembered the Mercer name.

The Carter scandal had become a case study.

The Emily Foundation had helped thousands of women.

Clara had become a respected advocate.

Michael had built a career exposing financial corruption.

Samuel became a physician.

He wanted to help people because his mother had once fought to stay alive.

And I finally retired.

We bought a small house near the ocean.

Nothing like the mansions my father had owned.

Nothing like the towers I controlled.

Just a simple house.

A garden.

A porch.

A place where no one needed permission to breathe.

One evening, Clara and I sat outside.

She leaned against me.

“You're quiet.”

“I was thinking.”

“About what?”

“The night the hospital called.”

She looked at me.

“You still remember?”

“Every second.”

She took my hand.

“Do you regret anything?”

I thought carefully.

“I regret not recognizing the danger sooner.”

“I don't blame you.”

“I know.”

I looked toward the sunset.

“I also regret that Emily never got to see this.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“She is part of this.”

“How?”

She smiled.

“Because losing her changed us.”

She rested her head against my shoulder.

Not every tragedy has a meaning.

Some losses are simply cruel.

But what we choose afterward matters.

We chose love.

We chose truth.

May you like

We chose each other.
