Chapter 16 - THE FATHER I BECAME

Samuel grew up surrounded by love.
Not fear.
Not secrets.
He knew who we were.
He knew what happened.
When he was old enough, we told him about Emily.
He asked questions.
We answered honestly.
One afternoon, he sat beside Clara and touched the memorial stone.
“That's my sister?”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“I wish I could have met her.”
“So do we.”
He placed a small flower beside the stone.
“I think she would have liked me.”
Clara laughed through tears.
“She would have.”
I watched them.
For the first time, I understood what my father never did.
Power isn't the ability to make people afraid.
Power is the ability to protect someone without becoming their jailer.
I had spent half my life trying to control situations.
Now I simply wanted to be present.
Samuel started school.
Clara opened the Emily Foundation.
Michael became a financial investigator.
My mother devoted the rest of her life to helping victims.
The Mercer sons who cooperated became witnesses for the prosecution.
Thomas died in prison.
My father remained there for the rest of his life.
I visited him once.
He looked older.
Smaller.
He asked about Samuel.
I answered.
“He's happy.”
He looked down.
“I never knew how to make anyone happy.”
“No.”
“You did.”
I shook my head.
“I chose to.”
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, I felt pity.
Then I left.
I didn't need his apology.
May you like
I had already built a life beyond him.
