Chapter 11 - THE SECOND SECRET
I confronted Clara.
She stared at the letter.
Then she began shaking.
“There is something I didn't tell you.”
“What?”
“Your father didn't learn about the ledger from me.”
“Then how?”
“He planted the idea.”
I waited.
“He wanted me to find it.”
“Why?”
“To make me believe I had control.”
Clara explained that months before the attack, she had discovered suspicious transfers.
My father had deliberately allowed her to see them.
He wanted her to investigate.
He wanted her to become the person who exposed the network.
Because he needed a scapegoat.
If everything collapsed, he could blame Clara.
But something unexpected happened.
She found the real evidence.
She discovered that the network had been storing evidence against itself.
Everyone had blackmail files.
Everyone had secrets.
My father had built an empire where no one trusted anyone.
Then Clara found the master archive.
The ledger.
“The ledger isn't a list of crimes.”
I looked at her.
“It is a list of leverage.”
“Against everyone.”
“Yes.”
“And your father wanted it destroyed.”
She nodded.
“But I copied it.”
I stared at her.
“How?”
“Before they attacked me.”
She had hidden a digital copy.
I asked where.
She smiled faintly.
“Somewhere your father would never look.”
“Where?”
Clara touched the wedding ring on her finger.
“In here.”
The ring contained a miniature data chip.
I stared at it.
She had carried the evidence through everything.
Even the attack.
Even the ICU.
Even death's edge.
I kissed her hand.
“We finish this.”
She nodded.
