Chapter 8 - The Order David Gave

On Monday morning, David’s chief of staff requested a meeting with federal investigators.

His name was Ethan Reed.

He had worked for David for nine years.

Ethan always seemed invisible.

Perfect suits.

Quiet voice.

No opinions unless asked.

He entered Agent Cole’s office carrying two laptops and a cardboard archive box.

I was allowed to attend because several records involved my accounts.

Ethan looked exhausted.

“I should have come forward earlier.”

Agent Cole asked.

“Why didn’t you?”

“Fear.”

“Of David?”

Ethan nodded.

Then he looked at me.

“I’m sorry about Lily.”

I swallowed.

“Did you know?”

His silence answered before his words did.

My entire body went cold.

“When?”

“The second day she was hospitalized.”

I stood.

“You knew.”

“Maya.”

“You knew my daughter was dying.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“The hospital called the executive office.”

“And?”

“I told David.”

The room stopped moving.

I heard my own heartbeat.

“What did he say?”

Ethan looked at Agent Cole.

Then at me.

“He told me not to interrupt the trip again.”

I gripped the chair.

“Again?”

“You had already called repeatedly.”

Ethan opened one laptop.

“I maintained David’s communication logs.”

He turned the screen toward us.

There it was.

A written instruction from David.

ROUTE ALL CALLS FROM MAYA TO VOICEMAIL UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Underneath was another note.

NO FAMILY INTERRUPTIONS.

I stared at the timestamp.

Six hours before Lily died.

“He knew.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Not everything.”

“What does that mean?”

“I told him Lily was hospitalized.”

“Did you say ICU?”

“Yes.”

“Did you say meningitis?”

“I said suspected meningitis and critical condition.”

I sat down because my legs stopped working.

David had known enough.

Maybe not that she would die.

But enough to come home.

Enough to answer.

Enough to ask one question.

He had chosen not to.

Ethan slid another document across the table.

“There’s more.”

It was an email David sent to Nolan Pierce.

The timestamp was twenty-three minutes after Ethan informed him about Lily.

Proceed with Meridian transfer tonight.

Maya will be distracted.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Agent Cole’s jaw tightened.

David had not merely ignored an emergency.

He had used it.

While I sat beside our child in intensive care, David realized I would be too overwhelmed to watch our accounts.

My grief had become his opportunity.

Agent Cole asked Ethan.

“Why keep this?”

“Because I knew eventually someone would need it.”

Then Ethan removed a small envelope from the archive box.

“David asked me to destroy this before he left.”

Agent Cole opened it.

Inside was a copy of Lily’s trust amendment.

At the bottom was my forged signature.

But beside it, handwritten in blue ink, were three initials.

N.P.

Nolan Pierce.

And underneath them was a date.

A date from six months earlier.

Ethan whispered.

“Nolan didn’t just know.”

May you like

“He witnessed the forgery.”
