Chapter 17 - Katherine’s Secret

I moved away from Katherine.

Agent Cole stood between us immediately.

“Katherine.”

She lifted both hands.

“Maya, I can explain.”

“Why were you in my father’s hospital room at two in the morning?”

She looked terrified.

“Because he called me.”

“You never told me.”

“He made me promise.”

“Play the recording.”

Agent Cole continued.

My father’s voice weakened.

“Katherine, take the amended trust.”

Then Katherine spoke.

“I have it.”

“Do not file it until Maya is safe.”

David interrupted.

“What amended trust?”

My father answered.

“The one that ends your access to my family.”

David’s voice changed.

“You can’t do that.”

“I already did.”

Then Katherine said.

“David, leave.”

The recording captured footsteps.

A door slammed.

For several seconds, only my father and Katherine remained.

My father whispered.

“If anything happens to me, protect Maya.”

The file ended.

I looked at Katherine.

“You knew.”

“I knew your father intended to remove David.”

“For seven years?”

“Yes.”

“Why hide it?”

“Because the amendment disappeared.”

She began crying.

“The original was supposed to be filed the next morning.”

“Your father died before signing the final notarized copy.”

“Without it, I had no enforceable document.”

I felt betrayed.

“You should have told me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because you were eight months pregnant.”

“You loved David.”

“And I had no proof he had done anything criminal.”

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked.

“Who else knew?”

“Thomas.”

“Nolan?”

“No.”

“David?”

“He knew an amendment existed.”

That explained everything.

David spent seven years hunting for a document he feared might still destroy his control.

Agent Cole asked.

“Where was the draft?”

Katherine looked at me.

“Your father gave it to Thomas.”

My pulse jumped.

Thomas was brought into a secure conference call.

When we asked about the document, he became silent.

Then he said.

“I still have it.”

Everyone froze.

“Where?” Agent Cole demanded.

Thomas gave an address.

A bank outside Chicago.

Safe-deposit box 317.

We obtained a warrant.

Inside the box was the unsigned trust amendment.

It could not remove David by itself.

But underneath it was something more important.

A handwritten letter from my father.

It described David’s attempted financial manipulation.

Named Nolan.

Named several shell entities.

And included one sentence that made Agent Cole sit back.

David believes Maya will inherit control automatically when I die.

He does not know Lily already has a protected beneficial interest.

Lily had owned part of the company from birth.

David had stolen money from a trust belonging to a shareholder.

His own daughter.

Agent Cole looked at me.

“This changes the fraud charges.”

I nodded slowly.

But I was thinking about something else.

David had known Lily was in intensive care.

And while she was dying, he approved another theft from an account that legally belonged to her.

Now I finally knew what my counterattack would be.

I would not merely remove David.

May you like

I would put every stolen dollar back in Lily’s name.
