Chapter 18 - The Counterattack

The federal hearing was packed.

Reporters filled the hallway.

Former employees waited outside.

Investors watched from another room.

I sat behind prosecutors with Lily’s photograph inside my purse.

David entered in a dark suit without a tie.

He looked toward me once.

I did not look away.

The government presented the yacht server.

The fingerprint video.

The forged signatures.

The proxy scheme.

Thomas’s testimony.

Ethan’s communications log.

Julianne’s recordings.

Then Agent Cole introduced the network data.

It showed David actively using the internet while rejecting my emergency calls.

The courtroom became completely silent.

The prosecutor displayed the timeline.

3:14 p.m.

Hospital informs David’s office that Lily is critical.

3:26 p.m.

David orders all calls from Maya routed to voicemail.

4:02 p.m.

Maya calls.

Rejected.

4:11 p.m.

Maya calls.

Rejected.

4:37 p.m.

David approves a 2.1-million-dollar transfer from a reserve secured by Lily’s trust.

5:08 p.m.

Lily leaves her final voicemail.

5:19 p.m.

David uploads corporate documents to offshore storage.

6:42 p.m.

Lily Vance dies.

David stared at the screen.

Then lowered his head.

No lawyer could explain that timeline away.

At noon, the board filed a civil recovery action.

By three, the court froze Blue Meridian permanently.

By five, more than nine million dollars had been located.

The next morning, Julianne accepted a cooperation agreement.

She surrendered the jewelry.

Her interest in Blue Meridian.

Her recordings.

And two hidden accounts David had placed in her name.

She faced consequences.

But her cooperation reduced them.

David’s empire collapsed in seventy-two hours.

For the first time, I thought the worst was over.

Then Agent Cole called me.

“We recovered the final missing funds.”

“How much?”

“Two point eight million.”

“Where?”

“A charitable account.”

I frowned.

“What charity?”

A pause.

“The Lily Vance Pediatric Foundation.”

I stopped breathing.

“There is no Lily Vance Pediatric Foundation.”

“Exactly.”

David had created it four months before Lily died.

He used our daughter’s name without telling me.

The account had received millions.

But almost none had gone to charity.

I felt sick.

Then Cole added.

“There is one legitimate payment.”

“To whom?”

“Children’s Memorial Hospital.”

My heart stopped.

Lily’s hospital.

“When?”

“Three weeks before she became ill.”

“What was it for?”

Cole hesitated.

“A confidential pediatric research program.”

I sat down.

“What kind of program?”

“We’re still reviewing it.”

For the first time, fear replaced anger.

Because suddenly Lily’s name was connected to something David had never mentioned.

May you like

Something involving the same hospital where she died.
