Chapter 2 - The Folder

David laughed once.
It was a short, nervous sound that died almost as soon as it escaped his mouth.
“Emergency arrest?”
He looked from the state troopers to the man holding the leather folder.
“You have the wrong person.”
The man opened the folder.
“My name is Special Agent Aaron Cole.”
“I’m assigned to a joint federal financial-crimes task force investigating Vance Biomedical Holdings.”
David’s expression changed.
Not much.
But I saw it.
A tiny tightening around his mouth.
A flicker of recognition.
Julianne slowly released his hand.
Agent Cole continued.
“You are being taken into custody pursuant to a federal warrant involving wire fraud, conspiracy, falsification of corporate records, obstruction, and the unauthorized transfer of protected trust assets.”
David stared at me.
“Maya, what did you do?”
Those six words told me everything.
Not what happened.
Not why agents were standing inside our home.
Not whether I was safe.
He immediately assumed I had caused his problem.
I folded my arms.
“What I should have done years ago.”
One trooper moved behind him.
David stepped backward.
“Wait.”
“My attorney needs to be here.”
“You can contact counsel after processing,” Agent Cole replied.
Julianne began inching toward the doorway.
Agent Cole looked at her.
“Ms. Cross, please remain where you are.”
Her face drained.
“Me?”
“I don’t know anything about his company.”
David snapped toward her.
“Don’t say anything.”
That was his first real mistake.
Agent Cole noticed it.
So did I.
Julianne noticed it too.
“What do you mean, don’t say anything?”
David ignored her.
His eyes returned to me.
“Maya, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
I walked toward the leather folder.
Agent Cole removed a document and handed it to David.
David read the first page.
Then the second.
His breathing changed.
The document wasn’t merely a warrant.
Attached behind it was a court-approved asset freeze covering accounts David believed no one else knew existed.
Cayman Islands.
Panama.
Zurich.
Three domestic shell companies.
And one account carrying a name that made his knees almost buckle.
LILY VANCE EDUCATION AND MEDICAL TRUST.
David lifted his head.
“That account was legal.”
“No,” I said.
“It wasn’t.”
“You pledged our daughter’s trust as collateral without my authorization.”
His eyes widened.
“That’s not what happened.”
“I have your signature.”
“No.”
“You have a copy of my signature.”
Silence filled the empty room.
Agent Cole watched David carefully.
Then he produced a small evidence bag.
Inside was a black USB drive.
David stopped breathing for a second.
I had never seen that drive before.
But David clearly had.
Agent Cole noticed.
“You recognize it.”
David looked away.
Julianne suddenly whispered behind him.
“Oh my God.”
Everyone turned toward her.
She stared at the evidence bag.
“That was in my yacht luggage.”
David’s head snapped around.
“Julianne.”
Her voice trembled.
“You told me it contained tax backups.”
Agent Cole stepped closer.
“Where did Mr. Vance ask you to take it?”
Julianne looked at David.
For the first time since they entered my home together, she looked afraid of him.
Not impressed by him.
Not seduced by him.
Afraid.
“David told me never to bring it back into the United States.”
Agent Cole closed the folder.
David lunged one step toward her.
The troopers immediately restrained him.
“Don’t listen to her.”
But Julianne was staring at him as though she had finally realized the yacht had never been a vacation.
It had been an escape route.
And David had planned to use her as the person carrying the evidence.
Then Agent Cole turned toward me.
“Mrs. Vance, there is one more matter.”
David froze.
Agent Cole’s voice softened.
“It concerns the fifty calls placed to your husband fourteen days ago.”

For the first time since returning from paradise, David looked truly terrified.
