Chapter 16 - The Yacht Never Went Dark

Nolan survived.
Barely.
After the attack, federal prosecutors moved him to an undisclosed location.
David was immediately returned to custody because investigators feared someone might silence him next.
But one thing David said stayed with me.
There was a backup.
Proof.
I replayed every detail from the yacht trip.
David called it a digital detox.
Yet the yacht had satellite internet.
His phone connected dozens of times.
He approved transfers.
He exchanged encrypted messages.
Then I remembered a photograph Julianne had posted before deleting her social-media accounts.
David sat at an outdoor table.
Behind him was the yacht’s communications dome.
On the table was a laptop.
He had never disconnected.
He had simply disconnected from me.
I sent the photograph to Agent Cole.
Within hours, investigators subpoenaed the yacht’s full network logs.
The results arrived the next morning.
David’s hidden phone had accessed a cloud-storage server repeatedly.
One upload occurred eleven minutes after Lily’s final voicemail.
Agent Cole stared at the timestamp.
“That could be the backup.”
The server account was encrypted.
But David had left one clue in a password manager.
PEANUT2019.
Lily’s nickname.
I hated him for using it.
I hated that it worked.
Inside the server were thousands of files.
Contracts.
Audio recordings.
Scanned signatures.
Bank authorizations.
David had documented everything.
Not from guilt.
From paranoia.
He wanted leverage against everyone.
One folder was titled M.
We opened it.
Inside were videos from my home-office security system.
There I was.
Pressing my fingerprint against the enrollment tablet.
Seconds later, David entered after I left.
He removed a hidden storage module from the reader.
Agent Cole exhaled.
“That clears your biometric authentication.”
I almost cried.
Then another folder appeared.
LILY TRUST.
Inside was the entire fraudulent history.
Every forged document.
Every instruction from David.
Every payment to Nolan.
Every email threatening Thomas.
The case against me collapsed in a matter of hours.
But the final folder was the one that changed everything.
It was named MERCER.
My maiden name.
My father’s name.
Inside was an audio file recorded on the night he died.
Agent Cole looked at me.
“You do not have to listen.”
“Yes.”
“I do.”
He pressed play.
My father’s voice came first.
Weak.
Angry.
“You will never control this company.”
Then David.
“You already signed enough.”
“I signed nothing that gives you Maya’s shares.”
“You won’t be here forever.”
My blood froze.
My father replied.
“Is that a threat?”
A long silence followed.
Then David said something quietly.
“No.”
“It’s a prediction.”
The recording continued for another eight minutes.
And near the end, a third voice entered the hospital room.
A voice I recognized immediately.
Katherine Sloan.
My attorney.

The woman sitting beside me turned white.
