Chapter 9 - MARGARET’S SECRET
The accusation came the next morning.
Margaret’s attorney filed a document alleging Claire had fabricated Noah’s original allergy diagnosis.
Sarah nearly laughed when she first read it.
Then she stopped.
Because attached to the filing was a medical report.
It appeared to be from Noah’s former allergist in Boston.
The report stated Noah’s allergy testing was “inconclusive.”
Claire knew the document was false.
She also knew how convincing it looked.
Hospital letterhead.
Doctor’s signature.
Patient number.
Date.
Sarah called the allergist immediately.
Dr. Levin answered personally.
“I never wrote this.”
Claire’s relief lasted two seconds.
Sarah asked, “Can you prove that?”
“Yes.”
Dr. Levin’s clinic retained the original electronic record.
The actual report described Noah’s peanut allergy as severe and recommended strict avoidance plus immediate access to two epinephrine injectors.
The forged report changed several paragraphs.
Detective Alvarez added forgery to the growing investigation.
But another question remained.
Who had accessed Noah’s medical record to create such a convincing fake?
The answer arrived from the clinic’s IT department.
Someone had logged into the patient portal using Daniel’s credentials.
Seven weeks earlier.
The same week Hawthorne Pediatric Holdings had been created.
Claire sat at Sarah’s conference table.
“He downloaded our son’s medical records.”
“Yes.”
“Then changed them.”
“Looks like it.”
“Why?”
“To make your caution seem unreasonable.”
Claire rubbed her forehead.
Every lie had been constructed around another lie.
Sarah slid another document across the table.
“This is why they needed people to believe you were unstable.”
It was the trust agreement.
Daniel’s grandfather had written the provision years earlier.
If Daniel became the sole or primary guardian of a direct Hawthorne heir, he would control a major block of company voting shares.
But there was another clause.
If Daniel was found to have endangered that heir for financial benefit, his interest could be permanently transferred away from him.
“To whom?”
Claire asked.
Sarah pointed to the page.
“To Noah.”
Claire stared.
The shares would be placed in trust until Noah was twenty-five.
An independent trustee would control them.
Daniel would lose everything he had tried to gain.
Claire felt a bitter smile form.
“He knew that clause existed.”
“Absolutely.”
“So he needed it to look like I was the dangerous one.”
“Yes.”
Sarah leaned forward.
“And Margaret had another reason.”
“What?”
“If Daniel gained the voting shares, he had agreed to return control of Hawthorne Industries to Margaret.”
Claire understood.
This had never just been about Daniel.
Mother and son were rescuing each other.
Margaret wanted her company.
Daniel wanted her approval and the fortune attached to it.
Noah was the instrument.
Claire was the obstacle.
Her phone rang.
It was Detective Alvarez.
“We searched Margaret’s bedroom safe.”
Claire’s pulse jumped.
“What did you find?”
“A contract.”
“What kind?”
“Between Margaret and Daniel.”
Sarah switched the call to speaker.
Alvarez continued.
“It lays out exactly how the voting shares would be distributed after Daniel obtained primary custody.”
Claire whispered, “They wrote it down?”
“People who believe they’ll win usually do.”
Sarah asked, “Anything about Claire?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“What?”
Alvarez answered.
“One line.”
“What does it say?”
“Claire removed before September review.”
Emily, sitting across the room, went pale.
Claire asked quietly, “Removed how?”
“We don’t know.”
Then Sarah’s assistant rushed through the door.
“Sarah.”
“What?”
“There’s someone downstairs asking for Claire.”
“Who?”
“A woman named Rebecca Shaw.”
Claire froze.
She knew that name.
Rebecca had been Daniel’s girlfriend before Claire.
They had broken up suddenly nine years earlier.
Claire had never met her.
Sarah asked, “Why is she here?”
