Chapter 2 - THE PHONE

Claire did not open Margaret’s phone until the ambulance doors closed.

Noah lay beneath a blanket with oxygen covering his nose and mouth while the paramedic monitored his blood pressure.

Cynthia had whispered the passcode before stepping away.

417.

Margaret’s wedding anniversary.

Of course.

Claire entered it.

The phone unlocked.

Daniel called immediately.

Claire declined the call.

He called again.

She declined again.

Then a message appeared.

DON’T DO ANYTHING STUPID.

Claire stared at it.

The paramedic glanced over.

“You okay?”

“No.”

It was the first honest answer she had given anyone in years.

Claire opened Margaret’s browser history.

The most recent searches appeared immediately.

How much peanut causes anaphylaxis toddler.

Can an EpiPen stop severe peanut reaction.

How long after epinephrine can symptoms return.

Claire stopped breathing.

There were more.

Can a parent be blamed if child eats allergen accidentally.

Food allergy negligence lawsuit family gathering.

Anaphylaxis death time child.

Claire’s fingers went numb.

She took screenshots.

Then she emailed them to herself.

Then to her sister, Emily.

Then to an account Daniel did not know existed.

The ambulance hit a turn.

Noah whimpered.

Claire put the phone away and held his hand.

“I’m here, baby.”

His eyes opened slightly.

“Home?”

“Not yet.”

“Daddy?”

Claire could not answer.

Noah closed his eyes again.

At the hospital, the emergency department moved quickly.

Claire repeated his medication history.

His allergy history.

His weight.

The time of exposure.

The emergency physician ordered observation because a second reaction could occur after the first appeared controlled.

Claire sat beside Noah’s bed as rain streaked down the window.

Daniel arrived thirty-one minutes later.

He was not alone.

Margaret came with him.

Claire stood so quickly her chair scraped backward.

“No.”

Daniel stopped.

“Claire.”

“She does not come near him.”

Margaret’s lips tightened.

“This drama has gone far enough.”

A nurse stepped between them.

“Only parents right now.”

“I’m his grandmother.”

“And she is not entering.”

The nurse pointed toward the hall.

Margaret looked as if she had been slapped.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Mom, wait outside.”

Margaret left without looking at Claire.

Daniel closed the curtain.

“What did you tell the police?”

“The truth.”

“You don’t know the truth.”

“I watched her feed Noah peanuts.”

“She didn’t know.”

Claire took Margaret’s phone from her handbag.

Daniel froze.

That reaction was enough.

Claire felt her pulse change.

“You knew she searched this.”

“No.”

“You knew.”

“I said no.”

Claire held up the screen.

“Then why do you look terrified?”

Daniel glanced toward the curtain.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

He reached for it.

Claire stepped back.

The curtain opened.

A uniformed police officer entered with a woman in a dark blazer.

“Mrs. Hawthorne?”

Claire nodded.

The woman showed identification.

“Detective Rachel Alvarez.”

Daniel turned.

“This is a family matter.”

Detective Alvarez looked at him.

“A three-year-old was transported after exposure to a known life-threatening allergen.”

“That makes it my matter too.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

Claire handed Alvarez the phone.

Daniel moved.

“Wait.”

The detective looked at him sharply.

Daniel stopped.

Claire said, “It belongs to Margaret Hawthorne.”

Alvarez put it inside an evidence bag.

Daniel stared at Claire with naked hatred.

Not hurt.

Not betrayal.

Hatred.

And Claire finally understood something that should have frightened her.

It did not.

She had already lost the husband she thought she had.

Now she was only discovering what remained.

Then Daniel leaned close enough that only Claire could hear him.

“You have no idea what you just started.”

Claire looked at Noah.

Then back at Daniel.

“Yes.”

May you like

“I do.”
