Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT AT THE RESTAURANT

Investigators found the restaurant receipt.
Daniel had paid with his corporate card.
The server remembered them because Noah had been wearing a bright yellow raincoat.
Security footage had been archived because the restaurant had experienced an unrelated theft that week.
Detectives obtained it.
Claire chose not to watch at first.
Then she changed her mind.
She needed to know.
The video showed Daniel seated across from Noah.
A small dish of noodles arrived.
Daniel looked around.
Then he took a spoonful of sauce from his own plate.
Peanut sauce.
He mixed it into Noah’s noodles.
Claire’s throat tightened.
Noah ate three bites.
Within minutes, he rubbed his mouth.
Daniel watched.
No concern.
No surprise.
He took notes on his phone.
Then Noah vomited.
Daniel finally stood.
He carried Noah out.
He did not call 911.
He drove home.
Claire remembered opening the door.
Daniel had said Noah became carsick.
Noah had hives beneath his shirt.
Daniel told Claire she was imagining them.
She gave Noah antihistamine.
She almost took him to the hospital.
Daniel convinced her not to.
“It’s just a stomach bug.”
Claire paused the video.
She stood.
Then she walked to the bathroom and was sick.
Sarah waited outside.
When Claire returned, she looked different.
There was no confusion left.
No lingering question about whether Daniel had loved Noah in some damaged way.
Love did not perform experiments on a child.
Daniel had used his son as data.
The restaurant video destroyed his remaining defense.
His attorneys now advised him to accept responsibility.
Daniel fired them.
He hired new lawyers.
Then fired one of those.
He insisted Margaret had manipulated him.
Margaret insisted Daniel had manipulated her.
The prosecution prepared for trial.
The custody case moved faster.
The family court permanently suspended Daniel’s parenting time while the criminal proceedings remained active.
Claire received temporary sole legal and physical custody.
The judge’s voice remained calm.
“The child’s safety is not a bargaining instrument.”
Claire nearly cried when she heard it.
After court, reporters crowded the steps.
Claire did not answer questions.
Rebecca waited near the car.
“You okay?”
“No.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Good answer.”
Claire smiled for the first time that day.
They drove back to Emily’s apartment.
Noah ran to Claire when she entered.
He held a drawing.
Three stick figures.
Mommy.
Noah.
A dog.
Claire laughed.
“We don’t have a dog.”
Noah grinned.
“We get one.”
“Apparently I’ve been outvoted.”
That evening, he ate macaroni at the kitchen table.
Safe food.
A new EpiPen case sat beside Claire’s handbag.
Noah pointed at it.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Grandma bad?”
Claire considered the answer carefully.
“Grandma did something very wrong.”
“Daddy bad?”
Claire’s chest hurt.
“Daddy did something very wrong too.”
Noah stared at his spoon.
“Daddy love me?”
Claire wanted to lie.
She wanted to give him something soft.
Instead, she chose something true.
“Daddy should have protected you.”
Noah nodded slowly.
Then he whispered, “You protect me.”
Claire pulled him into her arms.
“Yes.”
“I will.”
Later that night, Sarah called.
“Daniel changed his plea.”
Claire sat up.
“To guilty?”
“No.”
“He still says he’s innocent.”
“Then what changed?”
“He wants a jury trial.”
“When?”
“Six weeks.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Sarah added, “And he says he’s going to testify.”
Claire opened them again.
Daniel wanted a stage.
Fine.
May you like
This time Claire would give him one.
