Chapter 8 - THE PRESCHOOL GATE

Claire was already moving before Sarah finished reading the message.
“Noah is here.”
“I know.”
“He thinks Noah is at preschool.”
“Yes.”
Sarah grabbed her coat.
“We need to tell Alvarez.”
Claire called immediately.
The preschool had already been notified that Noah would remain home.
Daniel did not know.
That gave police an advantage.
Officers arrived at the school before he did.
Claire was ordered not to go there.
She hated every second of obeying.
For forty-three minutes, nobody knew where Daniel was.
Then a black Hawthorne SUV appeared two streets from the preschool.
Daniel was driving.
He did not stop at the front entrance.
He parked near the employee gate.
He had an old security code.
He entered the grounds.
Police arrested him before he reached the building.
Claire learned the details afterward.
Daniel carried a backpack.
Inside were cash.
Noah’s passport.
A change of children’s clothing.
Two prepaid phones.
And a one-way charter reservation from Bedford to Montreal.
Sarah stared at the inventory.
“He was leaving the country.”
Claire felt nothing at first.
Then her hands began trembling.
Daniel had intended to take Noah.
He had not come to talk.
He had planned.
Again.
Always planning.
Daniel was charged with multiple offenses connected to the allergy incident and his attempt to take Noah in violation of the court order.
Margaret remained free.
For less than four hours.
Detective Alvarez called just before dinner.
“We found the pastry chef.”
Claire sat down.
“And?”
“He confirmed Margaret personally ordered the peanut tart.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“He also says she asked how much peanut butter would be needed to cause a noticeable reaction.”
Emily made a horrified sound beside her.
Alvarez continued.
“She told him Noah’s allergy was exaggerated and that she wanted to prove it.”
“Did he know Noah could die?”
“He says no.”
Claire did not know whether she believed him.
“But there’s more.”
Claire waited.
“Margaret paid him in cash.”
“That doesn’t surprise me.”
“She paid from an envelope.”
Alvarez paused.
“The envelope contained a note from Daniel.”
Claire’s heart began pounding.
“What did it say?”
Alvarez read the message.
Mom.
Make sure Claire sees you give it to him.
She needs to react publicly.
That was it.
The purpose.
They wanted Claire to explode.
They wanted witnesses.
They wanted the “unstable mother” story.
They had been willing to risk Noah to create it.
Claire walked to the window.
Boston lights reflected across wet streets.
“What happens now?”
“We’re bringing Margaret in.”
That should have felt like relief.
Instead, Claire felt grief.
Not for Margaret.
For the years she had spent helping these people pretend they were a family.
Police arrested Margaret Hawthorne at 8:17 p.m.
Television cameras were already outside the estate.
Margaret walked through them in a cream coat and pearls.
She did not look ashamed.
She looked offended.
As officers guided her toward the car, a reporter shouted, “Did you knowingly give peanuts to your grandson?”
Margaret stopped.
Her attorney tried to pull her forward.
Margaret turned toward the cameras.
And smiled.
“My daughter-in-law is lying.”
Claire watched the clip from Emily’s sofa.
Then Margaret added something nobody expected.
May you like
“And soon the entire world will know why.”
