Chapter 5 - THE CATERER

Detective Alvarez interviewed Ethan that afternoon.

He had photographs.

That surprised everyone.

Ethan explained that the catering company required staff to photograph special dietary preparations because of liability concerns.

One image showed an allergen-free dessert table.

Another showed a single peanut-butter tart on a silver tray in the service kitchen.

Attached to the plate was a handwritten card.

FOR NOAH.

CLAIRE’S MOTHER-IN-LAW REQUESTED.

Claire stared at the image.

Her anger became strangely quiet.

Margaret had not grabbed the wrong plate.

She had not misunderstood.

She had ordered the tart.

Ethan had something else.

A text message from his supervisor.

Mrs. Hawthorne wants the peanut tart brought only after Mrs. Claire Hawthorne leaves the table.

Claire felt dizzy.

She had left the table for less than three minutes.

Noah had spilled water on his sleeve.

Claire went inside to retrieve a clean sweater.

When she returned, Margaret already had the fork in Noah’s mouth.

Daniel had watched.

He had done nothing.

Detective Alvarez asked Ethan whether he heard anything else.

“Yes.”

“What?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Mr. Hawthorne spoke to his mother before dessert.”

“Which Mr. Hawthorne?”

“Daniel.”

Claire’s nails pressed into her palm.

“What did he say?”

Ethan looked at her apologetically.

“He said, ‘Make it convincing this time.’”

The room went silent.

Sarah immediately looked at Alvarez.

“That changes things.”

Alvarez nodded.

Claire barely heard them.

“This time?”

She whispered it.

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know what he meant.”

Claire did.

There had been another incident.

Six weeks earlier, Noah developed hives after eating cookies at Margaret’s house.

Margaret insisted the bakery had guaranteed they were peanut-free.

Daniel accused Claire of embarrassing his mother when Claire demanded the packaging.

The box had mysteriously disappeared.

Noah had needed antihistamines but not epinephrine.

Claire had treated it as carelessness.

Now she understood.

It had been a test.

A smaller one.

They had watched how quickly Noah reacted.

How quickly Claire responded.

How much evidence remained.

Claire turned to Sarah.

“They practiced.”

Sarah’s face hardened.

“Possibly.”

Claire looked at Alvarez.

“Can you arrest them?”

“I need enough evidence to establish intent.”

“You have the searches.”

“Yes.”

“The catering messages.”

“Yes.”

“The missing injector.”

“Yes.”

“Ethan’s statement.”

“Yes.”

“Then what else do you need?”

Alvarez did not flinch.

“I need a case that survives expensive attorneys.”

Claire understood exactly what she meant.

Margaret and Daniel would not arrive at court alone.

They would arrive behind an army.

Sarah closed her laptop.

“Then we build one.”

That evening, Noah was discharged.

Claire did not return to the Hawthorne estate.

She went with Emily to her apartment in Beacon Hill.

A temporary protective order barred Margaret from contact with Noah pending a hearing.

Daniel had not yet been restricted.

Sarah intended to change that.

At 10:42 p.m., Claire stood beside Noah’s temporary bed.

He was finally asleep.

Then somebody knocked.

Emily checked the hallway camera.

Her face changed.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“It’s Daniel.”

Claire approached the screen.

Daniel stood outside.

Alone.

He was holding Noah’s missing EpiPen.

May you like

And he was smiling.
