Chapter 4 - THE MEMORY CARD

The hospital was placed under temporary security lockdown.

Grant ordered two officers to remain outside Eli’s room.

He took the memory card to the digital forensics unit while I stayed with the children.

Eli refused to sleep.

Every sound in the hallway made him flinch.

Every time Grace cried, he forced himself upright despite the monitors attached to his chest.

“She needs me,” he said.

“You’ve already protected her,” I replied.

“Now your body needs rest.”

“You don’t understand.”

“What don’t I understand?”

Eli stared at his hands.

“Grace isn’t Cole’s daughter.”

I waited quietly.

“My real dad died four years ago,” he continued.

“Mom married Cole because she thought he was kind.”

“What changed?”

“He stopped pretending.”

Cole controlled the family’s money, monitored Mara’s phone, and installed cameras inside their home.

He punished Eli for speaking without permission.

When Mara became pregnant, Cole initially acted excited.

Then he discovered through a private medical test that Grace was not biologically related to him.

Mara admitted that she had briefly left Cole the previous year.

During that separation, she reunited with Eli’s biological father’s younger brother, Daniel.

Daniel died in a construction accident before learning about the pregnancy.

Cole allowed Mara to return only because he wanted control over her inheritance.

Grace’s birth destroyed his claim that they were a perfect family.

“He called her proof that Mom betrayed him,” Eli whispered.

The door opened before I could respond.

Grant entered holding a laptop.

“We recovered several files from the memory card.”

He showed us scanned bank statements, insurance policies, and recorded conversations.

Cole had taken out large accidental death policies on Mara, Eli, and Grace.

The policies had become active three weeks earlier.

There were also records showing that Cole had stolen more than two million dollars from a nonprofit organization that provided housing for abused families.

Mara worked as the organization’s financial director.

She had discovered the missing funds.

The final recording had been made the previous night.

Mara’s voice trembled through the laptop speakers.

“I copied everything.”

Cole answered calmly.

“You won’t live long enough to show anyone.”

Then another male voice spoke.

“I can make the report say whatever we need.”

Eli pointed toward the speaker.

“That’s Travis.”

Grant closed the laptop.

“We have enough to arrest both brothers.”

His phone rang again.

This time, his face lost all color.

A burned vehicle had been found in the desert.
