Chapter 12 - THE ACCIDENT THAT WASN’T

Daniel Bennett had fallen from an unfinished office building eight months earlier.

The investigation concluded that a safety cable had failed.

No criminal charges were filed.

Mara had always believed his death was an accident.

Cole’s final words changed that.

Grant reopened the case.

The original evidence had been collected by Deputy Travis Ransom.

Several photographs were missing.

A maintenance report had been altered.

The damaged safety cable disappeared before an independent expert could examine it.

Travis had controlled every important piece of evidence.

During questioning, Travis denied helping Cole cause Daniel’s death.

Then Grant showed him the financial records.

Cole had transferred eighty thousand dollars into Travis’s secret account two days after the accident.

Travis stopped talking.

He demanded a lawyer.

Meanwhile, Cole insisted that Mara had planned everything.

He claimed she stole the nonprofit money, murdered Daniel, and attempted to frame him.

He described Eli as a disturbed child who injured himself for attention.

The accusations were cruel.

They were also calculated.

Cole knew that creating doubt could protect him.

Mara feared the public would believe him.

The local news had already begun broadcasting photographs of their family.

One report described Cole as a respected business consultant and volunteer youth coach.

Another questioned why Mara had returned to him after leaving the marriage.

People who had never met her demanded to know why she had not escaped earlier.

Eli overheard one television report at the hospital.

“Are they going to think Mom did it?” he asked.

I turned off the screen.

“Evidence matters more than strangers talking.”

“Cole always says people believe the person who looks calm.”

“Cole doesn’t look calm anymore.”

Eli gave me a weak smile.

That afternoon, investigators searched Cole’s office.

Behind a false wall, they found files on Mara, Eli, Daniel, and dozens of families connected to the nonprofit.

There were photographs taken through windows.

Copies of medical records.

Insurance documents.

Audio recordings.

Cole had been monitoring abuse survivors and using private information to blackmail them.

At the bottom of one cabinet, officers discovered Daniel’s missing safety cable.

A section had been cleanly cut.
