Chapter 15 - THE BROTHERāS CONFESSION

Travis entered the courtroom wearing handcuffs.
He looked nothing like the confident deputy Eli remembered.
His shoulders were lowered.
A bruise darkened his jaw.
He had been attacked inside the county detention center the previous night.
Someone wanted him silent.
The judge closed the hearing to the public while federal agents reviewed his statement.
Travis admitted that Cole had planned Danielās death.
Daniel had discovered missing nonprofit funds while helping Mara prepare to leave the marriage.
He threatened to report Cole.
Judge Voss feared the investigation would expose the custody scheme and financial payments.
Voss ordered Cole to solve the problem.
Cole cut Danielās safety cable.
Travis removed evidence and changed the official report.
After Daniel died, Cole forced Mara to return by threatening to take Eli away.
Grace had been conceived before Danielās death.
Cole knew the baby could connect Mara emotionally and legally to Danielās family.
He viewed her existence as defiance.
Travis also confessed that the hot minivan had been planned as a triple crime.
Cole intended for Eli and Grace to die from heat exposure.
He planned to murder Mara afterward and place her body in the driverās seat.
The official story would claim that an overwhelmed mother had killed her children before taking her own life.
Travis would control the investigation.
The black device beneath the seat would lock the doors and erase parts of the vehicleās digital history.
My wrench had disrupted everything.
Coleās attorney called Travis a liar trying to reduce his sentence.
Then the prosecution played the recording from Graceās blanket.
Coleās voice filled the courtroom.
āThe heat will make everything look like an accident.ā
Eli closed his eyes.
I held his hand beneath the table.
The judge ordered Cole held without bail on multiple charges.
For the first time, the calm expression disappeared from Coleās face.
As officers led him away, he turned toward Voss.
āYou promised this would be buried,ā he shouted.
Every person in the courtroom heard him.
Judge Voss rose from the gallery.
He moved toward a side exit.
Federal agents blocked the door.
May you like
Voss reached inside his jacket.
Grant shouted for everyone to get down.
